The other three professors whose contracts were not renewed — Ehrs. Thomas Dewey, Alice Martin and Janice Grover — gave reasons that were vague and contradictory., M artin said she was told it was a m atter of not having faculty positions open. Grover said a letter from ,the department’s personnel committee in­ formed her that her continued employment “would not satisfy the needs of the departm ent’’ Dr. Wilfred FerrdD, department chairman, m id situations of this sort are not unusual. He said these people knew of the conditions of their em­ ployment and are informed of the term s annually. Ferrell refused to give the committee’s specific reasons for not renewing contracts. THE ASU GYMNASTS finished their dual meet season with an easy win over Arizona Friday night, sweeping five of six events and piling up 211.40 points to UofA’s 128. In final com petitive preparation for the WAC championships March 20*23 at BYU, the Devils finished the regular campaign with a 7-2 record. Against the Wildcats, AllAmericans Gary Alexander and L.J. Larsen ended their Sun Devil home careers in out­ standing style. Alexander tied for first place with teammate Kent Brown in the floor exercise and was the all-around winner with a 52.65 total. Larsen had a tremendous 9.65 ’ score in the side horse. M ark Dedrick lend Herb Hans'en won vaulting and parallel bars, respectively. ARIZONA STATE DOMINATED the 50th annual Arizona Open Tennis Tour­ nam ent a t Tucson Sunday, winning men’s and women’s singles and doubles. Jeremy Cohen edged UofA’s Warren Eber 7-6,7-5 to win the singles title. The doubles team of Ted Williams and Barry Young claimed the doubles crown with a win over Wildcat twosome Rand Evett and Steve Briggs. For the women, freshman Chris Penn beat another Sun Devil, Claire Schmoyer, for the singles cham pionship. Sch­ moyer came back to avenge her loss to Penn in doubles play, when she teamed up with Carolyn Lane to beat Penn and Nancy .Jknko 6-4, 6-3. MAYBE IT WAS just the wet Westwood turf that damaged UCLA’s power, but ASU more than held their own against the mighty Bruins Saturday hi a rain-marred dual track meet. The Sun Devils led 43-34 after nine events, but UCLA rallied to win 10 of 17 first places in posting an 81-64 win and its 28th straight dual meet victory. ASU’s Steve Williams and Larry Lawson performed well in two events.
