Mr. Penick. ASU’s part-time A ffirm ative Action officer, said: “The same situation‘goes with those in the ethnic backgrounds- We are not in bad shape.” Are we to infer that the ethnic minorities have achieved as great a dimension as the women in teaching positions at ASU? Nowhere in the article are there figures to substantiate such a statement. We don’t know w hether the reporter !T3 kN inadvertently om itted such pertinent informatici to sup port Mr. Penick’s claim or if Mr. Penick himself suffered a temporary lapse of memory and conveniently slithered his way out of i t. In either case, wè feel that such figures should be made public to cast aside all doubts concerning ASU’s commitment to affirmative action or equdl employment opportunities. Such figures should be made public since the imiversity is a tax supported institution. Heretofore, people have had problems obtaining information pertaining to the ethnic m inority employment and student breakdown at ASU. Specifically, we are in terested in answers to the following questions concerning Chicanos at the university: how many are employed in ad m inistrative positions, in cluding a breakdown of their rank? What is the breakdown of each departm ent’s com m itm ent to implement the proposed affirm ative action program of the university? Why, does ASU have a part-time affirmative action officer? And most important does ASU have an effective affirmative action program, which has had a final approval by the federal government? ft Sincerely, Herman A lcantara.
