Dr. Moran, a Rhodes Scholar, is definitely an intelligent man, but like many oi his colleagues who have little knowledge of journalism or newspaper management, his complaints about the paper (real and imagined) miss the point. . After complaining the paper is inaccurate and sloppy, he finally asks the question, “Why can’t the newspaper of a university with some 28,000 enrolled souls be significantly better than it is?”' But Dr. Moran, you don’t provide an answer. It’s a closer walk, students’ say. Those who arrive on «ampm by mid-morning usually must park bt such far away lots as Packard because closer lots are full. Susie C erri, a senior education major* bought a parking sticker, but by 9:40 a.m . when she arrives for class, Cerd bypasses ASU lots to park on the west side of Mill Avenue. “It saves me time, parking by Dairy Queen,” she says. Craig Rise, a senior finance major, often parks on East 14th street. He Said he had a sticker last year but could rarely find a parking space, especially for his 9:40 or later classes. “It i s , closer to the business building to park on 14th street than to park in a lot across campus,” he 'said. A ccording . to . R ichard Weinberger, “There isn’t any good parking. After 7:40 the only good places are a the stadium and that’s so far to ¿waHk I -I;.: ‘Thought one (permit) last yeaf, but never put it on my car, — I sold it- bade,” he said laugiingty. Weinberger felt the solution to student parking would be U p rise parking lots. He said it would not cost as much as the eight million dollar >Activity Center “that can’t bemused.” Weinberger said the problem is a lack of community interest “ The UofA has’ m ore ap propriations because they’re more interested than people here,” he said. Some residents ih areas w here students park, were found to be in sympathy with the students. . ;| Mrs. Joe Williams of 912 Maple Ave., said, “The College should prdvide places. I t’s ridiculous (for students) to have to walk so fa r." ' She agrees with the students that, changes a re needed. H aving.her driveway blocked by cars is an inconsideration on the part of the students, she said. But she even sees in* consideration of students to other students when they “squeeze a car in so the person can’t get out.” On E ast 14th street, the city of Tempe has helped to remedy resident complaints by painting curbs on both sides of driveways. The Ruiz’s of 220 E. *14 S t, said this has helped some. But they have three cars and only a single carport, so at least one car must sit on the street. When Mrs. Ruiz comes home for lunch S * m S $ tb j from work, she said she cannot p a rt in front of her house. . Two other residents on Maple Avenue said they did not object to students parting in front of theft; houses. One, Jim Evans of. 908 Maple Ave., said he even lets his friends p a rt h r his driveway. He added that “high school hotrodders” are more of «.problem for him. He is currently studying for his State Bar Examination. One resident on East 14th Street said • residents should charge money for student parting. “Fifty emits a car!” he said. C aptain Norman Peck, operation's officer of the ASU Security Police,, flattened the rum or th a t visitor parking around G rady Gammage ■Auditorium w ere not being loosenedto accommodate cars designated to other areas t>«H»useof construction on other lots. He also stressed that after the hours of restriction — “which are clearly marked on the signs” p f only cars with current pennits may park in those hits. ASU planning architect Bob Fiedler said the reason there a re hot high rise parking facilities is because the legislature has not appropriated funds'for such a project. So, while the completion of lots 26 and 10, which áre directly west of the Stauffer Hall, is on schedule and should be finish«^ between 30 and 60 days, faculty and staff are using lot 81 on the Northwest side of Gammage containing 68 spaces which were previously restricted to commuter students. When John Ellingson, director of planning and con struction was questioned as to where alternate parting would “They wfll hake to p a rt hi the °thèïv already designated commuter parking areas.” The sohdiori is still either p a rt a t Packard Stadium, park off campus in « residential area, or ride a boa. < Former professor gets top post at Indiana State D r.
