Jim Bralv Watermelon bust The rip-roaring, torrid Arizona day rippled sweat on my brow like tiny, advancing liquid armies. I had to have something cool to eat. Hop on the thumb-your-nose-at-gas-prices bi cycle for a heat-stroking ride to the store and a chance at some impulse buying. I was trying to figure out a way to keep my impulse healthy when I walked past them, made a U-turn and derided. Watermelons. Ten-cents-a-pound goodness. I couldn’t resist a'17-pounder. I’d worry about how to get it home on the bike later. Later came just about the time I walked out of the store. The bike had a carrier on the back with a couple of elastic cords. Problem solved. That baby was'in a precarious position and I rode slow and steady, thinking ahead to a bridge I had to cross about half a block from home. Shouldl walk the bike across or go ahead and ride? There’s rough dirt on both sides of the bridge and I sure didn’t want any accidents. I closed in on the bridge and decided to ride and re g re t.. That big gre^ melon started shifting and weaving, waving i ■ side to side and finally it ripped loose. KER-SPLAT. The melon spilled out its guts as it pounded, the ground. What do you do when a $1.75 investment in stantly drops in value by almost 100 per cent? I picked up the larger of two pieces and strapped it on to .the carrier. Deja vu. The other piece ? I figured to forget it. I pulled into my kitchen' parking spot and threw the in jured melon under the w ater faucet It had picked up a little dirt in the fall. I got it all spiffied up and took a bite. Really excellent. The dirt must have given it just that extra something. I changed my mind about the sm aller piece, got on tiie bike, rode back to the bridge and picked it up out of the dirt. I must have salvaged about 15 pounds of that melon. But I still consider that bridge to be my Watermelon Loo. slatepress Ed ito r M anaging Ed ito r News Ed ito r City Ed itor Assistant C ity Editor Photo Ed itor Assistant Photo Editors Sports Editor Assistant Sports Editor Colum nist Perspective Ed itor Staff A rtist •MARINO OP AMNESTY, I’D ALSO URI A CHANCI TO BARN MY WAY BACK INTO SOCIETY Ted W illiam son J im B ra ly A n ita M abante Jason Stiaw A m y Robertson G reg Hagan Roger O 'Connor John M assin gill R oger W ittl in M ik e Tulum ello B ill M cC le lla n Kevin Gustafson Psüy The following are the regularly scheduled hoars of the ASU Hayden U b n ry a n d die Memorial Union: LIBRARY HOURS Monday-Thursday .................. ...7a.m.-9:45p.m. Friday . , ^ . * . . . . . . — . . . . . . . . . 1 ajn.-5:45 p.m. Saturday , . . , . . . . .......9a.m .-4:45pjm . The operation is, injnost cases, irreversible. It costs $90 a t the Planned Parenthood clinic. P aid in advance, cash or credit card only. There will be some discomfort but patients can return to work the next day. THE COUNSELING session is something Planned Paren thood requires the husband and wife to take before they will give the man a vasectomy. But, surprisingly, there were no tough questions considering Barbara and I were only 23' when we decided I would have the operation this past summer. But we expected some “what happens if you get divorced and both of you rem arry and decide you want kids’.’ type of questions from the counselor. There weren’t any. Just the facts, not an interrogation. That was a Tuesday. I called the clinic Friday to check about appointm ents. They only do operations on Saturday and the counselor had said to call at least a week in advance. “I CAN GET you in tomorrow at 9:30,” the clerk said. Where is this week in advance stuff, 1 thought. “Go ahead and put me down, then,” I said with a bit of ap^ prehension. Less than 24 hours to get psyched up, shave my pubic hair (you do your own shaving to help Planned Parenthood keep down costs), get the $90 and make arrangements at my job for the possibility that I may have to have the day off. Whew! Barb and I got to the clinic at 9 and settled down for at least a half-hour wait. On the wall of the auditorium -like waiting room was a sign that said something like “Your right to abortion is being threatened, write your congressmen.” The sign listed their, names and addresses. with their.husbands) into one of two small operating rooms. The doctor was stiU in the room next door with the man that had gone in just before me. Just after getting undressed and lying down on a table, I hear this loud “AUUGGHH.” It sounded like it came from the room next door. Not what you’d call real reassuring, I was thinking. THE DOCTOR entered. A nice guy. Weathered face, about 45 years old. A retired ob stetrician. He used to deliver babies; now he cancels the orders. He was talkative, too, which helped ease my nervousness. “Yeah * I went through ^ the operation about eight years ago, in Japan,” he said a s he/ was putting on some rubber gloves. “You mean a vasectomy,” I Said, looking for a little reassurance, “That’s right. The ru le was prim arily designed to increase opportunities for women par ticipating in athletics, but it does not guarantee equal funding between men’s and women’s programs. Dr. Dorotiiy Deach, chairman of women’s P.E., said, “We cannot expect an institution, and I’m trying to be realistic here, to ju ft go overboard in funding womeh’s athletics. I’m all for women having equal opportunity, but it would be sort of ridiculous for us to have funding equivalent to that Dr. M iller (FredwJVIiller, ASU athletic directorfnas.’’ ASU FOOTBALL FANS will long rem em ber the fran tic churning legs of Ben Malone, who rushed for 1,129 yards for the Sun Devils last season. The world cham pion Miami Dolphins drafted Malone in the second round and head coach Don Shuts couldn’t be happier. “He explodes through this line quicker than any pack I’ve ever worked with,” said Shiila. “He’s a tough, strong runner. When you play for Frank Kush, you’ve got to be strong.’’ director, Perry Moore, did not receive a contract renewal this summer. Moore, 42, is the new athletic director at Long Beach State, winch was the target last January of three years of NCAA sanctions against its football and basketball programs. Long Beach was cited for recruiting violations in both sports. “Look, I can’t worry about what’s happened in the past,’’ said Moore.' “ Being on probation m akes the job tougher, of course, but - it’s reality. I have to build my own program ,’’ he said. “Everything else will take care Of itself.” “I have a reputation as a guy who lives by the rules. Our institution is part of the NCAA and we makes the-rules. If we make them, we Ought to live by them,” Moore said. HE MAY NOT be one of the m ost publicized coaches in college football, but ASU’s Frank Kush is doing quite well. After last year’s 11-1 record, the 45-year-old Kush ranks second on toe all-time list of active NCAA coaches behind Penn State’s Joe Paterao. Kush has compiled a 132-32-1 win-loss mark in his 16 years as the Devils’ head man, (a .793 win ning percentage). Kush is ranked ahead of such largerthan-life figures as Texas’ Darrell Royal, Alabama’s Bear Bryant, Ohio State’s WoodjL Hayes, Southern California’s John McKay and Ara Parseghian of Notre Dame.
