The Associated Student Senate: These students, combined in ah effort to p ro vid e re p re se n ta tiv e , d e m o cra tic governm ent passed an u n b elievab le allocation of student activity fees. The Senate approved allocation of $800 to send eight cheerleaders to Hawaii for a football game. They approved allocation'of over $500 to provide outfits, for the Spirit Squad (cheerleaders), both for indoor and outdoor weather conditions, including tailor-m ade pants for the gentlemen. They approved allocation of $300 for a new uniform for the Sun D evil mascot. They approved allocation of $2,500 for cultural weeks, events notorious for their lack of student participation. The Senate did approve fund allocation fo r som e e x ce lle n t p ro g ra m s and proposals; the $3,000 allocation for a student lobbyist is one of the most obvious exam ples. ''.I mm J . 4 Letters to the Editor Greek non-support ED ITO R: This past weekend I attended an event which was me of the most spectacular fund raising projects ever attempted. Hie “Dance for Those Who Can’t” dance marathon for Muscular Dystrophy sponsored by Pi Kappa Alpha and Alpha Delta Pi was a tremendous success. The dancers and the two Greek organizations raised $8,262 to go to help start Arizona’s first Jerry Lewis Summer Camp for Dystrophic Children. One thing distressed me, however. In talking with the co-chairman id the event, he informed me their goal was $10,000. It was easy to see that they could have reached that goal had they had just a little more support. I had expected ASU to be'somewhat apathetic towards the event because ASU is an apathetic school. What was really beyond my belief however was the lack of support from other Greek organizations. There were a few exceptions though; the ~ Kappa Sigma fraternity gave great support by entering fifteen couples; Theta Delta Chi also had some support for their dancers; but where was Greek brotherhood we always hear so much about? Upon more than one occasion, the Pikes and A D Pi’s had to bribe their fellow Greeks with prises, and even the Greek get-all, kegs, but the response was minimal, not hardly enough for one fogSororities were bribed by the r*mnp» of winning a micro-wave oven for their chapter, but fliey were too buay painting their windows and kissing Sigma Chi asses all week to be bothered with a bunch of unimportant dystrophic children. Either the immature competition of Greek Week philanthropies i which the Pikes said they wish to be no part of) kept spectators and par ticipation down; or it is evident where Greek priorities lie in a majority of cases. The Hell with useful projects, long live Derby Week! M ary Kienle Independent Rape protection Editor: ' Have you ever been taped? “A Case at Rape”, which was shown' as a movie on T.V., depicted the horrifying and grueling situation that a woman faces when reporting a case of rape, and the agony she goes through in the conviction of a rapist. There have been reported cases of rape and attacks on the ASU campus this school year. We believe that every woman should, have protection against this horrendous crime. If a few simple preventive m easures would be enacted, file women on this campus could walk alone at night with a grad er feeling of security. r More light cm campus would be one deterrent to woukMte attackers. A second proventative is a system which is presently being used on the University of Cokrado.Boulder campus. Each.women carries a . whistle at all times to be used in case of danger. This summons campus security who are on constant alert for the sound at the whistle. Steps can be taken to prevent the misuse of the whistle, although we believe the people of ASU are mature enough to fade this matter seriously. Enough said.
