One man, standby on a planter near die fountain on Orange Mall. He demanded that all of the hundreds of people gathered around him take off th eir clothes and be free. He m oved through the cheering crowd slowly, smiling and waving, until he returned to his clothes and dressed. Then, with little warning, (me guy and two girls took off their clothes, pushed and shoved their way around part of the fountain and crossed through it. Then, the blond, young man was back a t the planter, calling for us to take off our clothes. Someone, waiting around for an event that might not happen, said, “It’s like standing around waiting for lightning to strike again, in a particular place.” It was. The young man was telling us that if we did not strip, then the show was over, and we might as well go on home. Minutes later, there was a cracking sound, and a young man fell from hiis perch in a nearby tree. People rushed over, an older m an saying that a girl had been knocked out by the ' falling limb, but she was only dazed. Continued on page 12 Yesterday’s A JOB WITH A FUTURE!! iff. PROPHECY . The Charge will be indecent exposure. “It started out as a humorous tiling. It really is ’kind of deteriorating into something else,” Shell said. “Students are talking about a violation of state law, and in the future it w on't seem as funny. Anything that' involves violation of state law or the Code of Conduct concerns us.” '•■ Students don’t realize there is another side to the problem, said University Police John Dotty. “ A fter the incident on Tuesday night,” he said, “one woman called me to complain that die and her 13-year-old daughter were offended.” “if she should decide to press charges, the individuals could be arrested for contributing to the delinquency of a m inor,” Duffy $aid. Another problem concerning Duffy is some people on campus aren't students and streaking incidents just attract more of them to the area. “Wednesday night my men arrested two 19-year-olds who were not ASU students,” Duffy said, “Both were nude except few shoes and we found them on tiie footbridge over University waving a t passing cars.” Duffysaid his job is to protect the university community and while streaking appeared to be harm less, the consequences for such actions Should be con sidered. - l‘If someone is found guilty of indecent exposure, it affects getting into professional schools add jobs,” SheD said. ff a student is arrested he or she would come imder new rules of crim inal procedure begun last year in Arizona, Duffy said. Under these rules, Duffy said a person who is arrested will be photographed and finger printed. “If we arrest a person and know where we can find him later, we let him go.” A charge is not filed at that tim e, Duffÿ said. Instead, the inform ation police have is turned over to the Deputy County Attomy responsible for Tempe cases, and he decides whether to file charges. Another altern ativ e is available, Duffy said. “The Deputy County Attorney or the judge can kidt it ova- to the Dean.” Duffy did not say what would happen to a rre s t records, photographs and fingerprints even jf no charges are filed. He was joined by a girl, they removed th eir clothes and m oved through the ..crow d, ra th e r slowly for streakers, apparently around the fountain, and hack to: their clothes.. . They dressed, exhibiting none of the frantic haste usually associated with streaking. Soon, a young laity removed her bibbed overalls and tee shirt, and stood up next to the head m an. They were joined joined quickly by another girl, who by that time was a familiar body to the crowd. They stood nude on either side of the man, who again took off his unbuttoned sh irt, and dropped his pants. Some students in the crowd Seemed concerned the University Police hadn't shown up yet, although one uniformed officer walked past at a clothed moment, grinning as. the crowd booed and shouted at him. Meanwhile, a man saying be was from the Dean’s office was asking spectators to come down off the awning of Danforth Chapel and out of the nearby tree. The crowd had pretty well broken up when two men, non students, sat down nude on the m all, at the com er of the library. As a crowd formed around them, they put out two hats and tried to solicit money. People were throwing coins to them, and rem arks passed in both directions. When a rem ark got too heavy, a man came out of the crowd and punched one of foe nudists in foe mouth. The two continued to argue as the nudist got dressed. Clothed and surrounded by spectators, the ex-nudist invited foe other man to crane back out and finish the fight. The other man wouldn’t do it, and the crowd slowly broke apart. The two nudists picked up the money, and one said he couldn’t see w hat good a college education did. He said he’d been th ere, and he’s a college educated wino.
