M c W h lr t e r w a s s p e a k in g to the e s tim a te d 10,000 c h e e rin g p erso n s assem bled at the state capitol to demand legislation to invalidate the Supreme Court ruling that legalized abortion. Pro-life signs included such statements as " T h in k Tw ice About L ife " and " F ir s t: Abortion. Now: Infanticide. Next: Nazi A m e ric a ." W hat some m em bers of this group apprently fail to realize is that thinking about life — the m other's life — is one of the p r im e p u rp o s e s of the p ro -a b o rtio n movement. The m oral issue of whether a fetus isr a living being that should be protected must become an acad em ic discussion in the/ight of reality and reason. W hether abortion is m urder or not, there is a significant segment of the fem ale population that w ill dem and an abortion and w ill have it, whether or not it is legal or m oral. What the Right to Life advocates are attem pting to do is force desperatevwomen to return to the notorious "b a ck -A lley butchers." T h e anti-abortion forces would further create a double standard for women. F in a n c ia lly able women would have little difficu lty going outside the country for le g a l, m e d ic a lly - s u p e r v is e d a b o rtio n s . Poorer women do not h ave this safer alternative, and would be forced to x etu m to the dangerous and illegal methods available to them . Surely these pro-life forces who cla im to be so concerned with "thinking tw ice about life " have not forgotten the lonely, fearful women using coat hangers on them selves. O r is n 't their life worth thinking about. D is c u s s io n s a b o u t th e m o r a lit y of abortions m ust be left to the^JfttofvliSual. Abortions should not be regain ed as a method of birth control but as the only alternative in an im possible situation. The rights of the unborn fetus m ust come second to the m ental, physical and em otional health of the mother. Opinion state press Letters to the Editor Library We all realize, f am sure, that we open this new semester faring a great crisis not only in our community but in our nation. The energy crisis. We all m ust m ake some personal sacrifices in order to nruita» due dw ing this tim e. And the University community as a whole m ust also do their part. However, I do not believe they should Jeopardize the academic endeavors of students in order to conserve energy. I am speaking about the reduced library hours which went into effect this sem ester. I look upon the complete loss of F rid ay nights and Sunday mornings a s a p e a t hinderence to nty study habits. Many times a reference paper or research paper is assigned over a weekend. With the new hours in affect, students m ust wait until Saturday or Sunday to begin the assignment. H its m ay very well effect the quality of work because of the time- lim it im posed on it by these conditions. , I fully Understand die reason why the new hours were put into effect, however there are a number of students, I being one of whom, that take advantage of weekend study opportunities. I ' would think there is a better sohition to the problem than the present. One that does not sacrifice student study outlets in the name of energy con servation. Perbaptf'.. the . In preparation for the tour nament, the w restlers have been running three to five miles a day in addition to their physical contact in practice. “Some of our guys think they’re on the cross' country team ,” said Wadas. “If the WAC m eet wasn’t at home, we’d be a darker horse than we are. We hope to sneak through the back door,” he said. “I think - Brigham Young, Colorado State and New Mexico will be the favorites,” Wadas said. “All three are rated in the nation’s Top Twenty. It’s going to be a real dogfight.” In the last four years, ASU has finished no higher than sixth in the WAC and has won only eight dual m eets in that same period. The Sun Devils had a 3-11 dual m eet record last year. This season, ASU has a 6-2 record, including a 22-16 win o v er. nationally-ranked New Mexico. Wadas attributes the turn around in th e program to talented recruits and added team depth. “We had a good recruiting year which gives us 30 wrestlers vying for 10 positions,” Wadas said. “ If you’ve got good competition in the wrestling room, you’re going to have a better team .” Wadas said added scholarship money is a m ajor reason for the successful recru itin g . Two years ago, ASU awarded eight wrestling scholarships. There are. now 19 full scholarships available. “We can now compete against the top team s in recruiting with the number of scholarships we have. W ell be able to bring in a u th e n tic b lu e -c h ip p e rs,” Wadas said. The Sun Devils are a young The 10-man traveling SoleX ! P ed al It! The Sun Devils scored a 159-155 victory over Odessa College of Odessa, Texas with key performances by All-America Gary Alexander in file flow exercise, vaulting and standing bar. Alexander won the allround title with 50 point« Coach Don Robinson called ASU’s performance shabby, lamenting poor display by Alexander on the side horse, his weakest event. Robinson said the low attendance a t Saturday’s m eet was unacceptable for a team of ASU’s caliber. “We want a crowd,” Robinson said, “We’re one of the best team s in the country.” He noted that team s like Iowa State and Southern Illinois consistently draw large crowds. “Southern Illinois is probably our toughest m eet of this year,” Robinson said. “W ell beat them, 163-158.” Robinson said he has started a gymnastics booster Huh to increase attendance a t the inerts.
