A ctivity Center, said Associated Students President M ark
K errigan.
Kerrigan said, “ Out of a total of 14,000 seats in the new 8
m illion dollar com plex, 4,723 w ill be for ASU students. This is
opposed to 1000 student seats in the men’s gym , where
basketball gam es were previously held, he said.
“ These are quality seats,” Kerrigan pointed out. “ About
600 of them are level with the playing floor and most of them
are near m id-court.”
Kerrigan also said there are no posts or beams
obstructing spectators’ views.
“ The agreem ent with the University on these seats lasts
for two years,” explained K errigan, “ After two years, we
could go for m ore seats if the demand is up.”
He said students w ill have to pick up the tickets three to
four days in advance of the gam es. The tickets w ill be in a
random grouping so everyone has an equal chance of getting
the best seats.
Kerrigan said any tickets not bought for the student
section w ill be sold to the general public.

Israel bombs Syrian capital
Israeli jets launched bombing raids Tuesday on
Dam ascus the Syrian capital1, in a m ajor escalation on the
fourth day of the Middle E ast war.
C B S Radio reported the Israeli warplanes scored a direct
hit on the Russian Em bassy in Dam ascus during the raids. A
Soviet diplom at was quoted saying 30 Russians were killed.
Ground battles continued along the Suez Canal and in the
Goland Heights.
Conflicting reports were issued by Israelis and
Egyptians concerning the Suez conflict. The Arabs said
Egyptian troops had pushed the Israelis nine m iles back
from the canal, sending the Israelis “ fleeing into the Sinai
D esert.”
An Israeli m ilitary intelligence chief said Tuesday,
Israeli forces pulled back two or three m iles from thei|original Suez defense lines.
An Israeli newsman reporting from the Suez front
estim ated that thousands of Egyptians died while seizing
Israeli strong points in the northern sector of the battle area.
No foreign newsmen were allowed to visit the*
battlefronts to check the reports.
The Israeli m ilitary command claim ed its troops had
driven Syrian forces from the Golan Heights, but battles
continued in the area as the Syrians launched counter
attacks.
Iraq and Algeria announced they have sent jets to fight
alongside Syrian and Egyptian warplanes. Iraq and Morocco
also joined in offering reinforcement on the Arab side.

Of the slightly over 100 responses to a
State Press survey appearing last
Wednesday on married student housing, 99
percent of the respondents said they feel
there is a need for the housing on campus.
Only one response was negative.
Five persons who answered 'yes* to the
question 'Do you feel there is a need for
married student housing?' said 'no' to the
second question, which asked if they would
use such housing.
Six persons did not respond to the second
question..
Many of the affirm ative respondents
also commented on the survey forms saying
'definitely' and 'get something done.'
Since we feel this survey only shows the
students who had tremendous interest in the
subjects, an informal mall poll was taken.
In a ratio of 25-1, students questioned
said there is a need for married student
housing. The sample in this case was more
than 200.
These strong results in support of
married student housing will be forwarded
to Associated Students.
M arried student housing needs to be
discussed at length between the students
and the administration and ASASU should
establish a commission to look into setting
up these discussions soon.
Our surveys show at least some people
feel strongly that there is a need for
m arried student housing, so let's get busy
and do something about this

False rumors of a Je a n Dixon prediction
of murder, in M anzanita bring to mind the
succession o f rumors that goes through the
office of a newspaper.
Sin ce the a v e rag e read er doesn’t
usually get to hear them , I ’d like to take
this opportunity to share some of my
favorites.
Not long ago, the State Press heard
“ through the grapevine” that Manzanita
was sinking, and soon wouldn’t be
habitable anym ore. A check with the office
of grounds and construction showed, to our
disappointment, that if M anzi is sinking,
it’s not in a m easurable amount.
Another report said the reason students
aren’t allowed on the E ast Butte during
football gam es is that ancient Indian
paintings on the rocks m ight be defaced.
One poor photographer edmbed the butte
for hours before reaching the conclusion
that it was a hoax.
M y favorite of all tim e cam e last year,

when a reporter got wind that Gam m age
Auditorium from the air looks like a giant
toilet. It seemed Frank Lloyd W right had
had an argum ent with the Arizona Board of
Regents and had designed it that way out of
spite.
A u th o rities assured us th at th e
resem blance between the building and
potty, though real, is purely coincidental.
A sup p lem en tary ru m or, prob ab ly
started by a member of the State Press
staff, that the m usic building was designed
to look like a roll of toilet paper, was also
quickly quashed.
We newspaper people need these tidbits
of inform ation to brighten our days and
m ake our jobs more interesting. Besides,
one never knows when he’ll find out one of
them is true.

Disabled students say

Construction causes hazards
Complaints, suggestions and
responsibilities are being
thrown back and forth between
physically disabled students
and physical plant officials.
“ I ’ve gotten a lot of feedback
concerning problems created
by construction,” said Michael
Marteno, a wheelchair student,
“ especially from blind students
who have gotten lost or in­
convenienced by construction

classes.”
“ There should be a way blind
students could get the message
ahead of time, so alternate
routes could be devised,” he
said. “ Could (John) Ellingson
(physical plant director) have
someone call up the dorm or the
students and warn them?”
Marteno suggested a signal
that makes noise at con­
struction sites or portable
ramps over trouble areas to be
installed to help the situation.
“ I can give them ideas,” he
said. “ Which one is the best, I
don’t know. At least if we could
work on a plan together.”
“ I’m sure they don’t go out
with the intent of purposely
neglecting us,” Marteno said,
“but we have' to make an
awareness of the situation.”

“ I don’t know how many
times I ’ve been late, or haven’t
made it to class because I’ve
had to find a way around torn up
roads and barricades,” said
Ana Gonzalez, a blind student,
“ I mean, I get lost as it is —and
construction doesn’t help any.”
The construction in front of
the education building has
caused Gonzalez much in­
convenience, she said.
“ I’d trip over a new hole
everyday,” she said. “ I
would’ve gotten lost in the
barricades, except one of the
workers helped me.” .
“ The desk at Manzanita did
call about the work being done
in front of Manzanita,” she said.
“ Otherwise I wouldn’t have
known.”
“ And that is the only time I ’ve
ever been warned,” She said.
Gonzalez said the con­
struction fence bordering the
Manzanita sidewalk has
become a hazard for herself and
other Mind students.
“ The fence leans over,
making sharp metal edges on
the top low enough to poke
someone’s eyes out,” she said.
“ If we’re made aware of
these proMems, we’ll make an
attempt to correct them ,”
Ellingson said.
