r ii ARIZONA STATE IMVER9TY VoL 51, No. 96 Campus police need weapons, says faculty Hie Faculty Senate approved a report of die Special Committee on Campus Se curity Practices Monday, which said it was not feasible to ctisarm campus pdfice. Hie question of campus security prac. tk es was raised earlier in the year by Dr. Mark Header, assistant professor of political science, who suggested police officers should be prohibited from carry ing weapons during daylight hours and using cam eras while policing die Mall. The report of the committee stated that the campus was not an ideal com m unity in which police need not be armed. It said if that were the case, the police them selves could be dispensed with. The report added that if the police were disarmed die void would be filled by die Maricopa County Sheriff’s office. “It is infinitely to be preferred that necessary policing be done by the cam pus farce, which is subject to University control and sensitive to campus condi tions,” die committee recommended. Concerning the use of cam eras, the committee said pictures of demonstra tors should not be taken infiess the law is actually being violated. The committee also rep u ted it could find no evidence that campus security **was maintaining a political picture file. In conclusion, the committee said cam pus police have perfum ed their func tions “tactfully and with due regard for the main tenets of an academic com munity and the rights and liberties of its members.” Friday, April 25,1969 Tempe, Arizona Tuition to be one topici Regents face exams By RAY KIPP “Maybe they were forced to,” Pritz University Regents, like students, will laff said. “ This is what we want to find also be facing examinations next month, out.” only theirs will be conducted by the Ari He said he was under the impression zona Legislature. that if any major problems occurred, the The Regents have been invited to ap Regents could have requested supple pear before the Legislative Joint Budget mental funds. As to the second category, they made a fairly good case for Leonardo da Vin ci, but failed miserably with Casanova, naturally. Are we now to go through an era of proving all famous people to have been black? May I prophesy they’ll never make it with Leif Ericson or that old documentary movie hero, Nanook of the North. Allen Thompson Editor’s note: Cleopatra wasn’t Greek. -She was Nubian. Some of the parents denounc ed sex education as a Com munist plot, others said it would make perverts of their children, and many declared that they wanted to teacb their offspring about the birds and bees themselves. Sooner or later, the world will be Riled with Fenwicks. * Faculty Adviser Prof. Robert E. Lance * * Meanwhile, we’ve heard from yet another persecuted soul, this one an old man named K. K. Russell of Portland. He is principally worried about “money-mad doctors” and the crooked judges and lawyers seeking to destroy the pension plans of senior citizens. • It seems the poor man iras fired by a railroad for discuss ing the Vietnam War during the lunch hour. When he wrote an “essay” to , a local judge about the injustice of the courts, he was sent to psychiatrists. “Communism p r a c tic e s peace and economic usefulness by restraining its peoples with the Law of Moses and Rome,” Russell says. He also refers to the “right to reason guaranteed to all Communists by God,” certainly a strange contradic tion of orthodox Marxism. Though he condemns Ameri can brutality against the “inno cent Viet Cong,” he believes the Russian invasion of Czecho slovakia was a just putdown of “insolence toward Law and order.” To illustrate his contention that all men have the same goals in life, he asks “Why do we all buy clothes?” and an swers, “Because we cannot cannot get them for nothing.” Strange. Andre Watts Television Young pianist sets Gammage concert Andre Watts, the young pian ist who recently appeared with Zubin Mehta and the Los Angel es Philharmonic in an NET Fes tival on Channel 8, will appear in person at Gammage on May 1. Final program in’ the 1968-89 Fine Arts Series, the 8:30 p.m. performance by the 22-year-old American pianist will open with Mozart’s “Rondo in A minor,’’ followed by Schubert’s “Phantasie in C m ajor.” After the intermission, Watts will present Rachmaninoffs “Variations on a Theme of Cor elli,” Debussy’s “Estampes” and, in conclusion, Chopin’s “Ballade in G minor.” During a.six-week concert tour last fall of seven European countries, the keyboard artist gave recitals in Stuttgart, Ham burg, Munich, Milan and Flor ence in addition to making 12 appearances as soloist with ma jor European orchestras. Upon his return to the United States, he resumed the tour, longest in his six-year career, and is appearing throughout the country in recitals and with such orchestras as the Boston wad San Francisco Symphonies and the Cleveland Orchestra. He has been hailed by critics throughout the world for “a per formance full of fire” (Washing ton Post), and as “a pianist so gifted with communication that the music emerges with extra dimension, no m atter what the style!” (New York Post). In Paris he was described as “the sensation of the evening, a vir tuoso of the rarest sort.” Tickets for the program, pric ed at $5, 84 and $3, are on sale at the Gammage box office, 9613434. By LARRY NELSON NEI Assistant Sports Editor The turning point of the Sun Devils’ baseball season m a y very well occur this weekend in Albuquerque. New Mexico hosts Arizona State for a three-game series, the first game beginning to day at 3 p.m. and a doublehead er scheduled for tomorrow be? ginning at 11 a.m. The Devils take a 5-1 West ern Athletic Conference record into the series, compared to the Lobos’ 2-4 mark. If the Devils can win the series, they will de finitely be in command of the Southern Division race. After this weekend, six of the Devils’ remaining nine confer ence games are at home, and with the enthusiastic, screech* ing fans of Tempe, that is quite an advantage. The Lobos will be no push overs, though, as they own a 25-8-1 record overall. Albuquer que has been a stumbling block to several Devil squads in the Auto Painting .
