Two m ajor bills passed. One
consisted of the qualifications of
file financial officer and the pro­
cedure for his appointm ent; the
other dealt with a new Home­
coming Election Code.
O ther bills passed by the sen­
ate were:
• A bill to establish a new
num bering system an d codifica­
tion as AS statutes.
• A bill establishing an AS
endowment fimd from the un­
appropriated balance.
• A bill m aking ASASU a
m em ber of the W estern Collegi­
ate Association.
• A bill assuring the appoint­
m ent date of 11 board chairm en
by April 15 of each school year.
The m ajor bill which failed
in final reading w as a m easure
to reorganize the executive
branch. The purpose of the bill
was to liberalize the executive

branch by. repealing 14 existing
statutes.
BA SEN. Skip Swerdlow said
that the bill was “silly and crazy
— and you just can’t set up
something this brief.” However,
Inter-H all Sen. John Haines
quoted an AS executive officer
as saying, “We don’t pay atten­
tion to the statutes anyway.”
A f t e r considerable debate,
Speaker John H errick said that
the Senate should investigate
the m atter concerning illegal
procedures taken by the execu­
tive branch. G raduate Sen. John
Moore was appointed to head
the investigation with the power
to subpoena those involved.
On top of this the senate has
a 12-page budget to review and
two resolutions, including one
concerning students’ rights, be­
fore the 14th legislature closes
out its year.

ence.

Prof. Starsky began the dis­
cussion, saying the American
people have a basically wrong
assum ption which was express­
ed in yesterday’s State Press
editorial, that communism is
“ an ungodly m onster bent on
gobbling up the whole world,

m onster is inevitable, and that
we m ust confront the m onster
while we are still stronger, al­
though we will not destroy it.”
“This is a pretty heroic and
self-gratifying image of our­
selves,” he declared.
“What is the w ar all about?”

ence magazine.
Research conducted show­
ed that LSD induced chromo­
somal damage in human
blood cells.
To quote the magazine,
“Addition of lysergic acid
diethylamide to cultured hu­
man leukocytes (white or
colorless blood cells) result­
ed in a marked increase of

According to Dr. Herbert
L. Stahnke, director of the
Poisonous Animals Research
Laboratory, “The chromo­
somal damage reported here
could mean that users of
LSD could not have children
in the future or, if they had
them, they could be most any
type of serious anomaly.”
Commenting on the effect
of the hallucinogenic, Dr.
Stahnke said “these haOneiaogenics interfere with the ase
of the usual synapses of the

nervous system of the vari­
ous types of stimnlae.
“To illustrate, the stim­
ulus of seeing a sunset might,
as a result of these drugs,
result in the patient not see­
ing the beautiful scene but
hearing grotesque sounds or
having undesirable digestive

body because the impulse, in­
stead of traveling in the

In order to get to Omaha, site of the national tourney,
th e Sun Devil diamondmen have to get by arch-rival
Arizona.
The trial starts tonight at 7:30 when Coach Bobby
W inkles’ squad opens its traditional rivalry w ith the
W ildcats at Tucson’s Hi Corbett Field in the first of a
three-gam e series.
WINKLES has named ace southpaw Jeff Pentland, 11-0,
to take the mound against Arizona’s Rich Hinton, 4-0.
For tomorrow’s split doubleheader Tom Burgess, 9-0,
and G ary G entry, 6-1, w il hurl for the Devils in the 1:30
and 7:30 p.m. contests. UofA Coach Frank Sancet w ill
counter w ith Tim Plodinec, 4-2, and Pat O’Brien, 3-1.
“These are the games,” said W inkles. “We’re playing
for m arbles.”
AS FOR STRATEGY, he said, “We’re ju st going to
play. We ju st try to throw strikes.”
W inkles will go w ith a starting lineup tonight of
Fred Nelson, Scott Reid, Pentland, Randy Bobb, Joe
Paulson, Ron Davini, Dave Grangaard, L arry Linville
and Jack Lind.
He also added that it w ill be tougher to steal and
run in th e series because the three starting W ildcat
pitchers are all lefthanders w ith good moves.
Boasting a record of 29-3, th e Sun Devils are current­
ly rated third in the nation in comparison ,to the W ild­
cats’ 17th position. The W ildcats are 22-8. Students can buy tickets at th e gate for 50 cents plus

A pert, red-haired freshm an, who boasts
a high bowling game of 269, w ill compete
w ith 15 other contestants in th e Women’s
International Collegiate Bowling tourna­
m ent Saturday through Monday a t Roch­
ester, N. Y ,
Pam F ry er was selected on th e basis of
a regional tournam ent. She w ill represent
a region covering Arizona, New Mexico,
Wyoming, Colorado and Utah.

Miss F ryer started bowling eight years
ago, and currently has a gam e average of
185.
Last year she captured th e high series
singles in the N ational Youth Bowl. Pres­
ently, she participates in th e Tuesday night
Bowling Club a t the MU lanes.

THE SECOND exhibit is a col­
lection of lithographs, showing
the wide range of striking ef­
fects which can be achieved
with this medium. Among the
m ost outstanding pieces are
“Eugene C arriere” by M arc
Chagall and the “Aristide Bruant” poster by Lautrec.
The third is the Biennial Pho­
to Exhibition, which displays
some m asterpieces in both col­
or and black and white photog­
raphy.
On ihe second floor there are
two exhibits of modern a rt,
some of which falls into the
psychedelic catagory. The first

exhibit is in the m ain p art of
the gallery and offers such in usual works as “Stele Arcbaique,” a painting in basalt and
oil by Moshe E lazar Castel, “Al­
legory,” a work in crayon an
linen by Jean Cocteau, and
Henry C. Pearson’s op-art post­
er for the World University Ser­
vice Fund Drive.
In the m e m b e r s lounge,
(which is open to the public —
just don’t sit down) there is a
collection of works by Harvey
Leepa. These w ater color p a r t­
ings definitely possess a psy­
chedelic quality. Among the

The Phoenix Symphony Or­
chestra, accompanied by the
Phoenix Symphony Chorale, will
m ake its tenth and final appear­
ance of the season Monday a t
Gammage and Tuesday at Phoe­
nix U nit» High School.

Joining the Chorale for the
two perform ances are guest so­
loists Saram ae Endich, soprano,
and Joan Caplan, m e z z o soprano.
John McCollum, tenor, and
Ara B erberian, basso, who per­
formed here last spring with the
Phoenix Symphony and Chorale,

Ave., is presenting Maxim Gor­
ki’s im m ortal play “The Lower
Depths.” Dealing with slum life
in 19th Century Russia, the cast
includes William Edmonson,

Black.
