Stammat’s letter of March 23, in support of HB 247 to prohibit campus disturbances, quotes Rep. A1 Klender as saying in part, . . I will continue to support the principle that the legislature not only has the right, but the solemn duty to give direction to our colleges and universi ties . . It is beyond the grasp of most of us just how the state legislature thinks it can give direction to a university in that most of us have come to doubt that they could write clear di rections for crossing a street, at least not without referring it to committee, and then only if crossing streets wasn’t consid ered controversial. Three years ago the legisla ture was, in a sim ilar manner, avoiding its tax and revenue problems by debating the value of a crucial cock-fighting bill. A local radio station (KUPD) suggested that they could solve their revenue prolbems by re cording their debate on cockfighting and selling it as a com edy album. In the three years since then, cock-fighting has reached alarming proportions, but our tax and'revenue prob lems seem to have solved them selves. Aside from adding yet another redundancy to our state statutes, the sole purpose of HB 247 is to cover up the fact that the legislature is incapable of solv ing its real prcMems. They aren’t even bright enough to choose a clay pigeon anymore; while it is doubtful that many would come to the defense of cock-fights and campus disturb en out against HB 247. When the legislature Stops haluoin»ting cock-ifghts and campus disturb ances, it may then be able to accomplish something. As for Mr. Stammat’s sugges tion that we students write to Sen. Giss in support of HB 247, he is naive indeed if he thinks th at we are going to take time out from creating disturbances to urge more power for our be loved super campus cops. They do not need additional power; they are super enough as is. EDITOR: Mr. Stammat stat ed in his letter to the editor (Mar. 23) that House Bill 247 does not propose any new laws but merely transfers the power to enforce from the Highway Patrol to the office of Campus Security. However, Representa tive Kluender (Maricopa Coun ty) one , of the sponsors of H B 247 (the bill in question) stat ed in a personal inerview that, to his knowledge, the provisions of the bill were not on the sta tute books of Arizona a t pres ent. Dare I suggest that Mr. Stam m at’s letter was not “the true story behind the bill“ but m ere ly another example of “one-sid ed representation?” Had Mr Stammat presented his case as one-sided, it could have been accepted (and probably ignor ed) as such. But since he pre sents it as “researched facts” he leaves himself open for crit icism. The point in question is of far greater significance than the va lidity of parking tickets* We can listen to, but we don’t (and hope fully won’t) accept, the Attor ney General’s narrow concept of a university. Our University can become an institution for learning rather than production only when we realize that it is more than merely “regularly scheduled classes for duly mat riculated students.” The type of institution obviously desired by Unkept Office Hours EDITOR: Being unaware of the pervasiveness of this prob lem, or the degrees of delin quency which it possesses, I will temper my rem arks according ly. But why? — when appar ently there is no requirement to observe these hours, or even to be aware that they exist, after the first week of the sem ester? Several tim es it has been my experience to be insulted by waiting for an instructor to keep a definite appointment until I could wait no longer — insulted, and then exacerbated because the reason I made the appoint ment had its origin in the fact that I could never find him in his office during “office hours.” One is tempted to make the ob servation that if an employee of a private concern paid his job the same punctuality and ef ficiency he would likely be in a continuous state of unemploy ment As I prefaced these comments, I don’t know just how wide spread, how acute is this parti cular, seeming disregard for the student, but it might prove in teresting to find out. LAWRENCE J. KULIK University Purpose, Housing at Odds EDITOR: If our prim ary pur pose at ASU is to further our education, why are we made to get down on our hands and knees with Bab-O and a scrub ber and remove black marks made by the chairs? As listed in the Student Hand book (page 25) under the dif ferences between high school and university living (No. 7), High School: “You have special home duties, e r r a n d s , and chores besides your s c h oolwork.” University: “Your pri mary concern is your education al progress.” Evidentally, the Housing Office did not receive, a copy of the Student Handbook. At Palo Verde West, the girls rooms are subject to monthly inspections by a representative from Housing. If a room is not completely immaculate, a note is left stating things which are wrong, such as: full waste bas ket, grease m arks on the walls, black marks on the floor, and scratches on the ceiling.
