coma. One cadet, Charles J. Karasek of Rillton, Pa., is train­
ing at Indian Town Gap, Annville, Pa.
During the summer each ca­
det engages in offensive and
defensive tactics from squad to
battalion level. Their gaining

all individuals have equal op­
portunity to function in a ma­
ture and effective way.
The practice of all service
professions is based on scienti­
fic knowledge — the effective­
ness of practice is, in large mea­
sure, dependent Upon the extent
and accuracy of the basic know­
ledge available. Médicine bases
its practice on knowledge de­
veloped by the life science; so­
cial work bases its practices on
knowledge developed by the so­
cial sciences, as well as by
medicine and psychiatry.
Social work has a major stake
in the prevention of individual
and social ills. It can be effec­
tive in its prevention only as it
has adequate scientific know­
ledge upon which to base its
practice.
Physical science has worked
diligently to provide effective
automation. Has social science
worked as diligently to provide
the tools for assisting man in
his use of leisure time? Pre­
sumably we must live with un­
anticipated cultural lag, but
must we sit back and accept
cultural lag that can be an­
ticipated?
The problem of man’s use of
leisure time has been anticipat­
ed for many years and we know
little more about it now than
we did then. There has been
some progress through the study
of the functioning of groups, of
people’s adaptations to specific
problem situations and of peo­
ple’s relationships to the larger
society, in terms of social class
and role behavior.
However, we are currently a
work-oriented society. We have
not made a dent in studying the
needs and desires of normal
people with a view to provid­
ing the knowledge that-will en­
able the service professions to
practice in such a way that con­
structive values can be used as
a base for a shift to a leisureoriented society. Physical, sci­
ence has done its job; social
science has not.
