College Avenue LITTLE,.M AN .O N CAM PU S What goes on behind the scenes at a college foot- ! ball game — that is behind the spectator scene? Be sides, observing the action on the playing field, more and more fans are beginning to indulge in some of their owri week-end games. Saturday night football games, offer a good per centage of the non-student adult fans a chance to apply their “sophisticated” behavior to new surround- \ ings. Drinking, betting, cussing and arguing, it seems, t are more healthful in the open air. This junior F. Scott j Fitzgerald populace is setting an example that, from all outward appearances, looks good to the students— so good that they try and imitate it. Outside the stadium the traditional ingredients for a football game are clearly reflected in the festive mood of the crowd. Good-natured jostling, shrill greet ings and laughter characterize well-intentioned fans -, mingling in the crisp autumn air. Once inside the sta- f dium it smells like the aftermath erf ah Elliot Ness raid. The first warm wave of alcoholic breath causes a nauseous effect that sets your, insides quivering; Af- { ter being conditioned to the smell, you are lulled into the same mellow feeling that’s radiated from the liquor lappers in the crowd. * Opening Kickoff The opening kick-off is the signal for the “fans” to loosen their bottles. Bottles are drawn from coat pockets, purses, bankets and rolled-up programs, just to name a few of the more obvious sources. The soft-drink sellers are kept hopping providing mix for the football game bartenders. Bags of crushed ice and boxes of paper cups are also smuggled in so the alleged fans won’t be kept thirsty too long. When the “well-oiled” fans get into action it’s something to see — especially between downs (foot ball down, that is.) They cheer their hearts out under the direction of a self-appointed cheerleader — usually armed with a bell or a horn. “C’mon now, let’s hear it for good ol’.SAU, USA?” His comrades snicker and then bend their elbows. Fi nally the cheerleader rings his bell and blurts out, “Go you Badgers!” Meanwhile bewildered non-drinking fans are fur ther distracted by the drinker’s incessant chatter. “Betcha five we get a touchback, er touchdown on this drive.” “Hey Charley pass the ice.” “Anyway we got a bigger band than they do.” “I dropped my bottle! Let me down, I gotta get it.” These are just a few of the familiar cries that echo from these adult fans. Others range from the usual drunken obscenities to the mumblings of an incapaci tated mind.
