THE TRUE AND TRAGICAL TALE OF HAPPY JACK SIGAFOOS Who would have thought th a t H appy Jack Sigafoos, th e boy the sky never rained on, would teeter oh the edge of a life of crime? Certainly there was no sign of it in his boyhood. His home life was tranquil and uplifting. His m other was a nice fa t lady who hum m ed a lot and gave baskets to th e poor. H is fath er was a respected citizen who could im itate more th an 400 bird calls and once saved an elderly widow from drowning in his good suit. (T h a t is, M r. Sigafoos was in his good suit; the elderly widow was in swimming trunks.) H appy Jack’s life was nothing short of idyllic—till he i?ent off to college. H ere H appy Jack quickly became a typical freshm an— tweedy,-seedy, and needy. H e learned the joys of rounding o u t his personality, and he learned the cost. His allowance vanished like dew before th e morning sun. There were tim es, it grieves m e to report, when lie didn’t even have enough m oney for a pack of M arlboro C igarettes—and you know how miserable that can b e ! To be deprived of M arlboro’s m atchless flavor, its easy-drawing filter, its subtly blended tastiness, its refreshing mildness, ite-meffable excellence, its soft pack or flip-top box— why, it is a prospect to break th e h eart in tw a in ! Marlboro-less and miserable, H appy Jack tried to get m ore money from home. H e wrote long, impassioned letters, pointing o u t th a t th e modern, large-capacity girl sim ply could n o t be courted on his meager allowance. B u t all Jack got back from hom e were tiresome homilies ab o u t th rift and prudence. T hen one dark day a sinister sophomore came up to Jack > and said, “F or one dollar I will sell you a list of fiendishly clever lies to tell your father when you need some extra money.” _ H e gave Jack the list of fiendishly clever lies. Jack r e a d : 1. A bunch of us fellows are getting together to buy a new house for the D ean of Men. i r 2. A bunch of us fellows are getting^ together to buy a heap' stone for Rover, our late beloved dorm itory watchdog. 3. A bunch of us fellows are getting together to endow a chair of E truscan A rt. 4. A bunch of us fellows are getting together to build our own particle accelerator. F or a m om ent poor Jack was tem pted; sin tT fliis father could ,not b u t {support all these laudable causes. T hen Jack ’s good upbringing came to the fore. H e turned to th e sinister sopho m ore and said, “No, than k you. I could n o t deceive m y aged parent so. And as for you, sir, I can only say —fie I” Upon hearing this the sinister sophomore broke into a huge grin. He whipped off his black h a t and pasty face—and who do you think it was? None other th an M r. Sigafoos, H appy Ja c k ’s father, th a t’s w h o ! “Good lad!” cried M r. Sigafoos. “You have passed your te st brilliantly.” W ith th a t he gave H appy Jack a half million dollars in small bills and a red convertible containing power steering and four nubile maidens. .. Fraternities and - sororities are back on the prowl for pledges, name talent is filtering into the sandy nightspots of the Valley of the Sun, and orange blossoms will soon be battling the Stockyard stench along College Avenue.
