ON M EN & BOYS • Réversibles • Twills * Gabardines * Flannels 'Plains or Fanys Reg. 6.98 to 12.98 Sports columnist Carl Porter of the Tucson Citizen, a daily p.m. paper, had some interesting things to say the other day about ASU, the UofA and Ulis Williams the top prep quarter jniler of all_tin^_ wilhua 46J.: effort Only he was Wrong. After Williams enrolled at ASU, Sorter wrote “It was heartbreaking news, needless to say, for Wild cat officials, who at one time had Williams all but sign ed ,sealed and delivered. “Thé scuttlebutt is that Ulis made his final decision between UA and ASU—and actually was leaning heavily toward Tucson until scared off at the last minute by ffs. °f being unable to make up certain scholastic deficiencies under UA's high scholastic standards.” But that’s not the real story. •; I? the UqfA was interested, Wildcat officials •cer tainly didn’t show it by their actions. After giving careful reading to Porter’s column Williams’ comments w;ere: “That isn’t true. I was interested in^visiting the UofA campus last spring but officials there told me that w a s‘impossible’. • w “Coach Cooper of the UofA didn’t contact.na.e until after the .high school season was over and I had run Now You Know 46.1. Sun Devil Stadium, and Sun “I wasn’t signed, sealed and delivered to anybody, Devil Gym. especially the UofA. They didn’t even ask me to come see the campus until a week before I decided to attend ASU in August. “My real choice between schools was between ASU W O 7-3982 and San Jose State—not ASU and the. UofA. And I wasn’t ‘scared off’ by any scholastic difficulties.” There you have it. Ulis Williams came to the school that wanted him the most. The school that had a coach willing, to go to a little trouble to give his personal atten tion and make a fine young athlete feel wantéd. SMALL THINGS . . . West Texas State appears to have developed a gridiron machine cortiparable to the one that won New Mexico State national acclaim, last fall. The Buffs, a team that won only five games in the past three years, have suddenly blossomed into power house stature* They discouraged Texas Western 56-27 Saturday and annihilated Brigham Young 55-8 the week before. Anne Pittman’s claim that ASU has the top aggrega tion of female net talent in the country was upheld in rather convincing fashion as the Devil dames copped top spots in women’s singles and doubles and girl’s singles at the Southwest Tennis Championships last weekend. There is a good chance that local tennis fans will get to see the local gals in action here against top com petition on a team basis later in the year. That would set a precedent, for Miss Pittman’s crew has long been a traveling bunch. • W h il e t h ey last SMILEY-BERGE FORD! ^ £ )e a le r ★ Complete Service Facilities ★ 7 Mechanics On Duty ★ Servicing AH Makes & Models N-Service • Hand Ironing • Cleaning • Alterations We, The New Owners, Solicit Your J U S T T ^ B iB c K S F ^ 16 East 8th Street - Tempe Phone W O 7-2064 1 Suds Patronage ASU CAM PUS 1 id e t e • Fluff Dry .
