R eports varied as to w hat happened a t the 'm eeting. “We ju s t w rangled back an d forth and had a good tim e,” explained Regents President A lex Jacom e, declining tc/sp ecify w hat decis, ions had been m ade. The reason for the closed doors, M r. J a come said, was, “T here w ere a iot of m atters w e w anted to discuss q uietly.” Newsmen o u t­ side the doors reported h earin g “angry voices an d heated debate.” Q uibbling was “ap parently on th e custom ary sectional basis” betw een T ucson-area and P hoen ix -arp a Regents reg ard in g expansion at A SU and th e UofA, according to reports in the daily press. U nder discussion w ere “a strin g of program s being sought by A SU and th e U niversity of A rizona,” Mr. Jacom e said. “We elim inated a T num ber of courses requested and approved a lot of them ,” he said,, declining to point out specific; action. Decisions will be m ade public “a t the next m eeting,” m em bers of the press w ere told. Mr. Jacom e said he didn’t know w hen th at w ould be. The UofA’s requests are said to include “distinction betw een its history and political science program s, tw o new PhD -level courses of study, and a new program in accouhting.” ASU’s request list is said to .include a school of architecture and bachelors degree in A rchi­ tecture, an honors^ program , new engineering program s, and m aster’s degree program s in art, French, G erm an, economics, geology, home economics, and physical education. A lthough this m eeting was public the first two hours, it sets a new record for length of closed Regents m eetings in A rizona since 1954, according to the Arizona Republic.
