LIGHT RAIL VEHICLE MOCK-UP TO BE DISPLAYED
AT METRO EXPO TOUR THIS FALL

V

alley residents can get a first look at what the METRO rail car will
look like when a mock-up version of the train arrives in November.
The METRO vehicle will be showcased at an unveiling event Nov.
10 to kick off a nine-week METRO Expo regional public tour.
The mock-up is approximately one-half the length of a standard vehicle.
During the tours, the public will be able to go inside the state-of-the-art
vehicle and check out the seats, interior bike racks, wheelchair areas and
passenger displays.

his fall, we kicked off METRO light rail construction in the
East Valley, the start of a nearly three-year, intense, instreet construction effort that will affect both travelers and
businesses along the light rail path. With Arizona
expected to grow from five million to 15 million by 2050, it is
important that we not only invest in existing transportation corridors, but also remain open to new modes of transportation, such
as light rail.

Here are some of things Valley Metro
Rail and its partner cities have in place to
assist and inform our community during

One of the most unique aspects of the business outreach and
assistance program is the Community Advisory Board (CAB)
component. CABs are comprised of business owners, residents
and neighborhood representatives in each area of the project
who evaluate the contractors on how well they minimize impacts
to the community during construction. The CABs can recommend that Valley Metro Rail award bonus payments for outstanding community mitigation efforts above and beyond that required
in the contract. Since light rail construction began in March, more
than $90,000 in bonus payments has been awarded.

impacts to businesses are minimized whenever possible, this is
still a major construction project and it is impossible to completely
eliminate every side effect, such as noise, dust, lane restrictions
and changes to business access points.

main line. Structural steel framing and initial electrical work
has also begun for the equipment maintenance building.

downtown Phoenix. Crews have been working on Central
and First avenues between Washington and Polk streets to
relocate utilities, install traffic signal foundations and reinforce an underground garage near Central Avenue and

between Central Avenue and Third Street to relocate utilities
and between Fifth and Seventh streets to modify a pedestrian bridge at the Arizona Science Center. Crews have also
begun structural work at the Margaret T. Hance Park Bridge
to prepare for future trackway.

billion, six-year federal transportation bill for the
nation's freeways and transit systems, which includes
more than $434 million for the Valley's light rail system.

The federal government has committed $587.2 million for
the initial 20-mile METRO light rail line through Phoenix,
Tempe and Mesa. The bill authorizes $90 million annually
through federal fiscal year 2009. To date, the project has
received nearly $133 million from the federal New Starts rail
program.

SEMINAR HELD TO HELP DISADVANTAGED BUSINESS ENTERPRISES

s part of its efforts to increase
Disadvantaged Business
Enterprise (DBE) participation on
the METRO light rail project, Valley Metro
Rail held a contracting seminar and networking event this summer. The Aug. 24
event attracted more than 125 attendees,
including those interested in working on
the project and representatives from
several of the project's existing contractors
and consultants.
The seminar provided information on

how to obtain work with the METRO light
rail system, including contracting opportunities and requirements, and provided an
opportunity to network with consultants
and general contractors already working
on the project, and those who might obtain
contracts on the rail system in the future.
"This event gave disadvantaged businesses the opportunity to see what their
options are and to learn how they can get
involved on the METRO project," said
Melissa Boyles, Valley Metro Rail's

Disadvantaged Business Enterprise
program manager. "We were thrilled by
the turnout and are eager to help more
DBEs become involved in this very exciting project."
As a federally-funded project, most
Valley Metro Rail contracts include a
requirement for a specified level of participation from companies certified as
Disadvantaged Business Enterprises. To
date, Valley Metro Rail has exceeded all
requirements for DBE participation.

omo parte de sus esfuerzos por incrementar la participación de las

(DBE por sus siglas en inglés) en el proyecto
del tranvía ligero, Valley Metro Rail llevó a
cabo un seminario de contratación y evento de
contactos este verano. El evento que se realizó
el 24 de agosto, atrajo a más de 125 asistentes,
incluyendo a aquellos interesados en trabajar
en el proyecto y a representantes de varios de
los contratistas y consultores actuales del
proyecto.

business.
