A.R.S. Title 28-907 states "...a person shall not operate a motor vehicle on the highways in this state when transporting a child who is under five years of age unless that child is properly secured in a child passenger restraint system.” Table 4 - 1 Child Restraint Usage (less than five years old) Severity of Injury No Injury Unknown Injury Possible Injury Non-Incapacitating Injury Incapacitating Injury Fatal Injury TOTALS Restraint Used Percent of Restraint Used No Restraint Used Percent of No Restraint Not Reported Percent of Unknown 10,157 147 741 236 50 3 89.62% 1.30% 6.54% 2.08% 0.44% 0.03% 212 6 34 33 7 2 72.11% 2.04% 11.56% 11.22% 2.38% 0.68% 337 52 35 17 4 2 75.39% 11.63% 7.83% 3.80% 0.89% 0.45% 11,334 100.00% 294 100.00% 447 100.00% The most dangerous place for a child to travel in a car is in your lap. T his is often called the “child crusher position.” In a crash of approximately 30 mph, a 10 pound infant will be ripped from a belted adult’s arms with a force of almost 200 pounds. If the adult is unbelted, the child is likely to be crushed between the adult’s body and the dashboard. Wearing a seat belt isn’t just a good idea; in Arizona, it’s the law.
