A.R.S. Title 28-907 states "...a person shall not operate a motor vehicle on the highways in this state when transporting a child who is under five years of age unless that child is properly secured in a child passenger restraint system.” Table 4 - 1 Child Restraint Usage (less than five years old) Severity of Injury No Injury Unknown Injury Possible Injury Non-Incapacitating Injury Incapacitating Injury Fatal Injury TOTALS Restraint Used Percent of Restraint Used No Restraint Used Percent of No Restraint Not Reported Percent of Unknown 11,923 150 836 292 47 10 89.93% 1.13% 6.31% 2.20% 0.35% 0.08% 265 2 46 45 27 4 68.12% 0.51% 11.83% 11.57% 6.94% 1.03% 338 43 52 19 2 2 74.12% 9.43% 11.40% 4.17% 0.44% 0.44% 13,258 100.00% 389 100.00% 456 100.00% The most dangerous place for a child to travel in a car is in your lap. T his is often called the “child crusher position.” In a crash of approximately 30 mph, a 10 pound infant will be ripped from a belted adult’s arms with a force of almost 200 pounds. If the adult is unbelted, the child is likely to be crushed between the adult’s body and the dashboard. Wearing a seat belt isn’t just a good idea; in Arizona, it’s the law.
