2006 Arizona Crash Facts Summary Section 4:- Safety Devices Arizona law requires young children to be restrained when riding in a motor vehicle. A.R.S. Title 28-907 states "...a person shall not operate a motor vehicle on the highways in this state when transporting a child who is under five years of age unless that child is properly secured in a child passenger restraint system.” Table 4 - 1 Child Restraint Usage (less than five years old) Severity of Injury No Injury Possible Injury Injury* Fatality Unknow n TOTALS Restraint Used Percent of No Percent Not Percent of Restraint Restraint of No Reported Unknown Used Used Restraint 12,016 89.82% 282 66.98% 395 76.40% 838 361 7 156 6.26% 2.70% 0.05% 1.17% 61 66 7 5 14.49% 15.68% 1.66% 1.19% 25 35 4 58 4.84% 6.77% 0.77% 11.22% 13,378 100.00% 421 100.00% 517 100.00% *Includes non -incapacitating and incapacitatin g injuries The most dangerous place for a child to travel in a car is in your lap. T his is often called the “child crusher position.” In a crash of approximately 30 mph, a 10 pound infant will be ripped from a belted adult’s arms with a force of almost 200 pounds. If the adult is unbelted, the child is likely to be crushed between the adult’s body and the dashboard. Wearing a seat belt isn’t just a good idea; in Arizona, it’s the law.
