On average, a police-reported motor vehicle crash occurred every 5 seconds, a person was injured every 11 seconds, and someone was killed every 12 minutes. These costs are an estimate of wage and productivity losses, medical expenses, administrative expenses, motor vehicle damage, and employer costs. A description of the National Safety Council's current cost estimating procedures may be found in the Technical Appendix of Injury Facts®. Effective with the 1993 bulletin, the Council extensively revised its cost estimating procedures. New components were added, new benchmarks and inflation factors adopted, and a new discount rate of 4% was assumed. For this reason, the cost estimates shown here are not comparable to those published in earlier bulletins. Some further revisions were made for the 2004 bulletin. 2004 Arizona Crash Facts Summary 1. "Safety Devices" refer to the use of helmets or safety belts depending on the mode of transportation. A.R.S. Title 28-907 states "...a person shall not operate a motor vehicle on the highways in this state when transporting a child who is under five years of age unless that child is properly secured in a child passenger restraint system.” Table 4 - 1 Child Restraint Usage (less than five years old) S everity of Injury T Percent of No Percent Percent Res traint Not Res traint Res traint of No of Us ed Reported Us ed Us ed Res traint Unk nown No Injury Possible Injury Injury Fatality Unknow n 12,565 890 408 4 126 89.79% 6.36% 2.92% 0.03% 0.90% 414 90 129 4 12 63.79% 13.87% 19.88% 0.62% 1.85% 413 50 45 1 35 75.92% 9.19% 8.27% 0.18% 6.43% Totals 13,993 100.00% 649 100.00% 544 100.00% The most dangerous place for a child to travel in a car is in your lap. his is often called the “child crusher position.” In a crash of approximately 30 mph, a 10 lb infant will be ripped from a belted adult’s arms with a force of almost 200 pounds. If the adult is unbelted, the child is likely to be crushed between the adult’s body and the dashboard. Wearing a seat belt isn’t just a good idea; in Arizona it’s the law.
