Fall 2013 President’s Message by Barry McNeill, 2013-2014 ASURA President We certainly got off to a great start this September with more than 70 people showing up for the Meet & Greet Pizza Party, organized by Barbara Eschbach and her Luncheon and Special Events Committee. We had good pizza, good camaraderie and recruited some new members and volunteers. I’d say that’s a pretty successful start to the year. In my last letter I mentioned two issues I wanted to address: increased membership and event attendance, and increased information on health and health insurance. Here’s an update: These are not new goals but they helped me understand better what the Board considers as it makes decisions about the Association. I further proposed that a survey of our members and potential members would be useful for addressing the first three strategic goals. I felt the fourth goal was best addressed by the Board and its committees. The Board unanimously approved the concept and four survey question groups were created. If we keep on schedule you should see the survey in early January. As for health issues, good progress has also been made. Art Ashton, Pat Moore and Phyllis Primas, our Health Insurance Liaisons, have worked closely with Jan Thompson and her seminar committee to develop a very The issue of membership and event attendance ambitious seminar in early October. The liaisons have also morphed into something more inclusive. Wilson Fall 2013 Revisions to ASURA Bylaws able on the ASURA website. In September 2011, then ASURA president Bill Moor appointed an ad hoc committee to consider improvements to and recommendations from ASURA members, for the ASURA Bylaws. Members were polled through email or letter between December 18, 2012 and January 31, 2013, and approved the proposed amendments. There were two material changes: Anyone interested in serving on the board should submit a statement of interest to Nominating Committee Chair Bill Moor no later than December 31, 2013. You may nominate yourself or another ASURA member as a potential board member. To be sure that your nominee’s name gets on the ballot, submit a petition of nomination bearing the signatures of at least ten (10) current ASURA members. All other nominees will be evaluated by the nominating committee. ARTICLE III.A. There has been discussion of whether ASURA may refer to the $30 payment as “dues.” After conferring with the ASU Foundation, which manages ASURA’s accounts, the Bylaw uses “dues” to refer to the annual membership fee. Success by the Decade By Connie McNeill A Second Decade of Success: A History of the Arizona State University Retirees Association is complete and available to ASURA members at no cost. The book was developed under the leadership of Val Peterson, who led a team of volunteers who were involved in the production of the book: writing and editing text; collecting and adding photos; and putting the material into printready format. The committee, whose names are in the bylines and acknowledgements in the book, raised donations sufficient to cover the cost of printing 500 copies, which is why the book is available to ASURA members at no cost. The revised Bylaws may be accessed on http:// asura.asu.edu/ and clicking on Bylaws in the right-hand column. Like most of the ASURA committees, the Video History crew usually takes the summer off. However, this year our vacation schedules worked out so that several of us were around periodically and therefore we took advantage of the opportunity to add a couple more interviews to our inventory. The latest additions are Quentin Bogart and Ed Scannell. (Video History Crew Members: Dave Scheatzle, Linda Van Scoy, John McIntosh, & Roger Carter) We also added several more of the short clips to the web site and have over 35 to offer viewers now. These brief vignettes from the full interviews are entertaining and interesting so I encourage you to take a look at them. Remember just go to the ASURA web site, click on Video History Program and you will see a list of all the individuals we have interviewed. Behind their name and department information, if you see the words “video clip” just click on that and a 1-3 minute clip will play. Our goal this year is to have these clips available for all of the interviews. Arizona State University Retirees Association Prime Times KAET Pledge Drive Last spring when members of ASURA met with Virgil Renzulli, Vice President Public Affairs and our Association’s sponsor within ASU, he suggested that we might like to help with the KAET, Channel 8, pledge drives. (Continued from page 6) We had an evening shift and by about 5:30 pm we’d been fed, “trained”, and seated in the studio waiting our first call. The first call was definitely the most difficult call of the shift as we worked our way through the provided script. What saved us all was to let the caller know that we were volunteers and were just learning the system. As soon as the caller heard that it was “Oh don’t worry; there is no rush; thank you for volunteering, etc.” The Shift Captain had told us that once we completed our first pledge the next would be much easier and that turned out to be true for the most part. Veterans’ Day Golf Tournament The 7th ASU Veterans’ Day Golf Tournament organized by ASURA will be held on Monday, November 11, 2013 at the ASU Karsten Golf Course. We hope to get 80 ASU employees, retirees, alumni, friends, people who enjoy a nice day on the golf course, and sponsors to participate in this “scramble” tournament. The entry fee is $85 which includes golf, cart, practice balls, 19th hole BBQ lunch, prizes and awards. Proceeds of this year’s tournament will be used to support ASURA’s Living Video History Project and to increase the endowment for the ASURA Scholarship. Once we got into the swing of things it was fun. The script got you started but after a couple of calls each of us had modified the script a bit to better reflect our personalities so it did not sound like we were just reading a script. It was not too long before we were discussing how beautiful the Vienna Opera House was, where the caller was when Elvis burst on the scene, what happened to the caller’s collection of vinyl Elvis records, etc. Most callers were calling to buy one of the pledge gifts shown on the television but some callers just wanted to pledge; they liked all the KAET programs! The weather will be great so plan on joining your colleagues for a fun day of golf and camaraderie. You can register by going to the ASURA website, at http:// asura.asu.edu or calling the ASURA Office at 480-9657668 to get a registration form. Our shift was from 5:30 to 10:00 pm which seems like a long shift but as long as we were working on the phones time flew by and most of us had calls coming in fairly continuously. We actually had all the lines in use during portions of the Elvis program. The only disappointment was that it was a virtual and not a live pledge drive. During a live drive there is a host in the KAET studio who makes the pledge appeal and generally says something about the volunteers that are working Arizona State University Retirees Association Prime Times (Continued on page 8) 7 Fall 2013 (Continued from page 7) On the Road Again!
