Summer 2013 President’s Message by Barry McNeill, 2013-2014 ASURA President As I began my year as president, I re-read A Decade of Success and the soon to be published A Second Decade of Success, which is being prepared by Val Peterson and his committee. It is truly amazing what has been accomplished in a few short years. Before the “founding fathers” (George Morrell, Bob Ellis, Dean Smith, Jim Creasman, Gale Richards) brought the association to life in April, 1991, there was: no lobbyist at the legislature specifically looking out for university retirees; no group working to make health insurance issues more understandable for university retirees; no organized group travel; no Adopt-A-Family, Scholarship or Video History; no Retirees Day or Seminars; and no holiday potluck, luncheons or golf tournaments. For those who do not know me, I come from the faculty side of the house (Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering) where I taught for 30 years. I retired in June 2006 and attended a few ASURA events but did not become actively involved in its operation until the fall of 2010 when I agreed to chair the Retirees Day Committee, which I have done for the past three years. This past year, in addition to being vice president, I have helped Connie McNeill implement our new Member-Event database, Wild Apricot, and have worked closely with the various event committee chairs to help them use Wild Apricot in advertising and registration for their events. I suppose most presidents take office with some vision as to what they would like to accomplish in the coming year. Working with the ASURA board (which this year got four recent retirees – Cecelia Fiery, Karen Fry Hammann, Glenn Irvin and Jan Thompson and one “old hand” Hal White) and the various committee chairs and liaisons, I would like to:  Address the issue of declining membership and event attendance, and, Work on increasing the amount and type of health-related information we have for our members. Today, we have all of these and more  thanks to the tireless efforts of the “founding fathers” and subsequent members who have volunteered over the years to be committee I hope you all have a nice summer and members, committee chairs, government and will take advantage of the programs ASURA health liaisons, office staff, board members has to offer when we start up again in the and officers. What fun for the models and attendees alike! The days event began with registration, then coffee, cakes, and chat served up in the ASU Memorial Union, Cochise Room. The attendees then dispersed to the various presentation rooms where, new to the program this year, were offered three sessions with three presentations each. The nine presenters, Aaron Brown, Dr. Lou-ellen Finter, Kimber Lanning, Dr. Neal Lester, Mark Vinson, Dr. Steve Ruff, Dr. Lee McPheters, Dr. Ed Finn, and Dr. Jay Braun gave talks that were well received and enjoyed by their audiences. Luncheon Program: The theme of the show was "Get Out of Town...Travel the World!" So, the fashions were selected by the models, our very own retirees, with the idea of what you might put into your suitcase for a trip to escape the heat and monsoons of the Valley during the summer. Also, many thanks to our pianist extraordinaire, Jan Thompson, who kept the models "in tune" with the theme! Wilma Mathews, Aaron Brown The lunch program began with a brief review of the past twenty Retirees Day events. Five of the past Retirees Day Chairs were present and recognized for their efforts. The Presentation, “Writing ASU History: Choices in Building Community and Balance”, was given by Drs. Stephanie R. deLusé and Denise E. Bates, co-authors of Arizona State University. The book is full of pictures and the presentation focused on how they made decisions on what pictures to include and what subjects to focus on. They showed how following a trail of contacts eventually lead to some family’s living room where they found important pictures not seen outside the family. The audience was engaged for the entire talk. After their presentations the authors autographed copies of their book, which was being sold by ASURA as a fundraising effort. Arizona State University Retirees Association Prime Times 11 Summer 2013 Fall Meet & Greet and Pizza Party - September 11, 2013 by Barbara Bradford Eschbach The first event of the ASURA year, co-hosted by the Luncheon & Special Events and Seminar Committees, is an invitation to a Meet & Greet Party with Free Pizza! Welcome our New Retirees and reconnect with former colleagues and long-time friends. Members of the ASURA Board, Committee Chairs, and Liaisons will be present and will announce events that are already planned during 2013/2014. This is also an opportunity to express your interest and/or volunteer to participate on various committees. The party program, see below, shows that, as we did last year before the party starts, there will be a panel of recently retired ASURA members discussing “Things I Wish I Had Known When I Retired”. While this panel is intended to help the very recently retired all members are invited to attend and share their experiences with the attendees. Spouses/partners/friends are welcome, too. Although the event is free, we need to know how many pizzas to order. So, please register (see instructions to the left) so you and your guests will be counted. Should you have any questions, feel free to contact Barbara Bradford Eschbach (Barbara.Eschbach@asu.edu or 480-209-0733).
