Moor, 2012-2013 ASURA President It’s now time for my last President’s message to the ASURA membership. I now know what bittersweet means in a case like this: it’s been my pleasure to serve you and to work with a group of highly motivated, hard-working colleagues, although it has been challenging at times. I will miss the job but will be perfectly happy to become the immediate past president. I believe everyone is aware that we had a dues increase this year which was intended to, at least partially, support an improvement in how we serve our members through data processing and handling. Connie McNeill spearheaded the analysis and selection of a system, Wild Apricot, that would do the job at as reasonable a cost as possible. Barry McNeill has taken over the implementation and training to use the new system. Speaking from the outside, I have used the system (with guidance) and found it to be everything claimed for it. In November we hosted the annual Tri-University meeting, visiting with our colleagues from UA and NAU. It was an enjoyable and informative meeting which should help improve our services to you. One of the most interesting and valuable parts of the meeting was a presentation by Mr. Pat Klein, ASRS. He provided us with good insights into the health insurance available for retirees. In addition, he gave us a good comparison chart (non-contractual) for the ASRS and ADOA health insurance plans. This chart is available for your examination by checking into the ASURA home page, http://asura.asu.edu Also this fall we conducted a thorough review of our bylaws. A committee composed of past presidents and chaired by Mary Stevens spent considerable time honing and refining the bylaws which were approved by the ASURA board. Final approval requires a positive vote from the members. I hope that each of you had the opportunity to review and cast your vote. The video history project has taken on an expanded outlook and life. Through the efforts of Linda Van Scoy and David Scheatzle, additional space has been provided to ASURA which can be used for an interview studio, eliminating the need to lug expensive video equipment from site to site. In addition, we will have space for a small meeting room and possibly an archive. If you, or someone you know, has a back file of ASU directories or ASU Yearbooks, and would like to donate them to a new home, please contact Linda, David, me or any other officer of ASURA. ASURA can help solve that problem and, in the process, help a student complete his or her studies. We are exploring ways to enhance acquiring members when they retire from ASU…stay tuned for future changes. Retiree’s Day is coming up on Saturday, February 23, in the Memorial Union on the ASU Tempe campus. The Retiree’s Day committee, chaired by Barry McNeill, has put together a great program with something for everyone. The cost for the day is $30 and that includes lunch. Of special interest is the duo of Stephanie R. DeLuse and Denise E. Bates, coauthors of a new book, Arizona State University, which will be for sale at the luncheon. ASURA will collect your books and sell them through an established vendor. Proceeds from these sales are put toward the association’s scholarship program which provides a tuition scholarship each year to a returning student (one who has been away from higher education studies for a period of time) or to a community college student, based on financial need and other criteria. Speaking of history, a monograph on the second ten years of ASU is in preparation. A committee, guided by the principal editor, Val Peterson, has been working on the first draft and hopes to have the finished proof ready before the end of spring. You will be provided with a gift tax receipt by the ASU Foundation, which administers ASURA accounts. For more information, please call Mary Stevens at 602-758-3750 or email her to marystevens0@gmail.com. As I have said in previous columns, I hope you’ll join us…on the ASURA Board or on a committee…as we need your ideas and new energy. Happy New Year to all of you from ASURA! ASURA Fall 2012 Seminar Series by Gary Kleemann How Medicare Works Seminar More than a dozen ASURA members attended this seminar presented by Mr. David Parra and Ms. Diane Sanders from AARP Arizona. Participants learned how Medicare works. They explained Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage (also called Part C) and how Medicare Parts A, B, and D work with each of the two options. Participants rated the session highly and many commented on how much they learned. ADOA & ASRS Health Insurance Open Enrollment Seminar An overflow crowd of more than 60 ASURA members came to learn about their health care options at this seminar featuring representatives from both the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS) and the Arizona Department of Administration (ADOA). A lively discussion was held and information was shared but many questions remained at the end of the seminar. We will be rethinking how we present this seminar next year. Arizona State University Retirees Association Prime Times 4 Spring 2013 Fall 2012 Luncheon Events - Lots of Fun! by Barbara Bradford Eschbach The ASURA Luncheons and Special Events Committee decided that we have been long overdue planning a luncheon to accommodate our many members who are residents of Friendship Village Tempe (FVT). So, on Friday, November 16th, we held a served luncheon for 48 attendees. Of the 48, 26 FVT residents walked from their Zeke Prust cottage/apartment to the lovely Skirm Auditorium. The non-residents of FVT were able to park at the nearby Catholic church and shuttle service to/from the parking lot to the Auditorium was provided by FVT management! The luncheon, which was excellent, was followed by a lively and entertaining 45-minute concert by the Tetra String Quartet. Members of Tetra are associate faculty of the ASU School of Music. The quartet performs widely throughout the Valley as Tetra String Quartet well as touring nationally and internationally. Sincere thanks is given to FVT resident and former ASURA president, Zeke Prust, for making most of the arrangements with FVT. In order to accommodate our ASURA members who reside at FVT, we received approval from the ASURA Board and the executive director of FVT always to hold future fall luncheons (e.g., every November) at this location. It was much fun for everyone! The annual Holiday Potluck & Bake Sale was held at the Community Services Building on Thursday, December 13th. This was a colorful af- Amparing & Vin Yang; Anna Marie Shivers fair, between the folks who attended and the delicious dishes that everyone brought to share. The new twist to this year's potluck was a Bake Sale to raise funds for ASURA. The table was full of goodies of all sorts: cookies, candies, fudge, peanut brittle, ginger snaps, breads of many sorts, holiday decorations, etc. It was all good/healthy "stuff!" Thanks to contributors and buyers alike, we raised $237 for ASURA! The best part of the event, aside from seeing longtime colleagues and friends, was the musical entertainment provided by Jan Thompson (pianist and professor of music), a recent retiree, and her fantastic violinist from the Phoenix Symphony, Robert Strava. Robert Strava and Jan Thompson 6th Annual ASURA Veterans’ Day Golf Tournament by The ASURA Golf Tournament Committee (Gary McGrath, Gary Krahenbuhl, Mernoy Harrison, Jim Odenkirk, Dave Scheatzle and Chair Dave Schwalm) After a year’s hiatus, ASURA held its 6th annual Veteran’s Day Golf Tournament on November 12, 2012, at ASU’s Karsten Golf Course. Fifty-nine golfers turned out bright and early on a beautiful Arizona fall day for a round of golf and a hearty BBQ lunch, concluding with an awards ceremony emceed by Gary Krahenbuhl. ASURA again partnered with Bobby Winkles in holding the event to raise money to support the Bobby and Ellie Winkles Scholarship Endowment and several of ASURA’s special projects, this year focusing on the (Continued on page 6) Arizona State University Retirees Association Prime Times 5 Spring 2013 (Continued from page 5) (6th Annual ASURA Veterans’ Day Golf Tournament) ASURA Scholarship and the Video History Project. Although planning for the tournament started a little late this year, we want to thank Sun Devil Campus Stores, Arizona State Credit Union, Sundt Construction, and TIAA-CREF for their generous sponsorships at the last minute. Thanks also go to GolfSmith, the ASU Sign Shop (Kelli Nemec), and Fernando Morales for their additional support and to Jim Odenkirk for putting together the tournament day raffle that proved to be very popular and profitable. Special mention is due to Golf Manager Daryl Crawford and his staff at Karsten Golf Course for ensuring that the day came off without a hitch. And, of course, the tournament simply would not have happened without the support of the ASURA Office Volunteers who handled the money and the pre-registrations, with a special shout out to Linda Van Scoy, Carol Berg, and Jack Sarrett who showed up on tournament day before sunrise to staff the registration and check-in desk, assemble the goody bags, and manage the prizes and anything else that needed managing. Office Volunteers in Learning Mode by Carol Moore, ASURA Office Coordinator Over the past eight months, the ASURA office staff has encountered several new learning challenges. First, Kathy Sobelman, Cannon Client Education Specialist, conducted two training sessions on operating the office’s newly leased Cannon Image Runner 1730 photocopy machine. This technological wonder replaced the old fax machine and the jam-prone photocopier. Second, after Barry McNeill’s two-part, step-bystep instruction sessions, most of the office staff became versed in Wild Apricot, a service to manage ASURA membership records and event registrations. The group gained experience in handling several fall event registrations including a seminar, the Fall Luncheon and the Holiday Pot Luck and Bake Sale. Finally…in January…the registration process began for the Wild West Adventure day trip and the 2013 Retirees Day. Enhancing ASURA Membership and Service to Retirees Post-April Fools’ Day Humor Conference by Elmer Gooding ASURA members are invited to a mini-conference on humor and its place in Arizona politics – both past and present! A review of our membership indicates that many new ASU retirees are becoming members of ASURA. However, there are some who have not taken the opportunity to become involved with the organization that represents their interests with the Legislature, the Arizona State Retirement System, health care insurance providers and the university. ASURA also provides educational and travel opportunities to its members as well as scholarships and other service projects. Since some of our retirees from ASU have not joined ASURA, we are embarking on a new program to expose those who are not members to this wonderful organization. The event is on Tuesday, April 2, 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., in the Tempe Historical Society Community Room, at Southern and Rural. There is no charge for the program, parking and access are convenient, and refreshments will be served. At a recent Council meeting, a program was approved to reach out to additional prospective members. Effective immediately, all new retirees from ASU will be given a free oneyear membership to introduce them to ASURA. They will also receive three free issues of Prime Times, our quarterly newsletter. To activate their membership for the free first year, all they have to do is fill out the membership application form and return it to the ASURA office. We hope that exposing prospective new members to the organization will demonstrate the benefits of becoming actively involved with ASURA. The keynote presenter is John Morreall, a well-known speaker on issues dealing with humor. A professor of philosophy at William and Mary University in Virginia, Morreall recently published Comic Relief: A Comprehensive Philosophy of Humor Don and Eileen Nilsen will open the event with a Power Point illustrating the part that humor has played in Arizona’s history since frontier days. Prime Times is issued three times annually by the Arizona State University Retirees Association with special editions as needed. Articles welcome, subject to Board approval.
