The ASURA Travel Committee has put together the perfect three days/two nights trip to Southern Arizona October 25-27 that combines educational sites with cultural visits. The excursion includes a visit to the Arizona-Desert Museum (a world renowned zoo, natural history museum and botanical garden all in one place) and the Steward Observatory Mirror Lab at the University of Arizona with a behindthe-scenes tour of how scientists are producing the world’s largest telescope mirrors. The mining town of Bisbee is the first stop on the second day with a visit to the Queen Mine and a search for remaining veins of copper, gold, turquoise and silver. Bisbee is also known for its well-preserved Victorian architecture. History buffs will enjoy the stop in Tombstone for a shootout with Wyatt Earp. The second day ends with a stay at the elegantly restored architectural beauty Gadsden Hotel in Douglas. The bus ride north on the last day includes a stop at the Singing Wind Bookshop in Benson and visits to some southern Arizona wineries. Costs for the Fall Journey (Double rate $375 per person; Single supplement $125) includes all admissions, food, lodging and bus transportation from Tempe public library and back. During the coming open enrollment period, you will have an opportunity to make changes to your Arizona Department of Administration (ADOA) benefits for the 2012 Plan year beginning January 1, 2012. If you do not want to make changes to your current benefits, no action is required. The best news is that no rate increases are expected. This is a welcome relief and quite a contrast to the national trend of increases approaching 9%. Again this year, you can make changes using the online form or with the copy mailed to you with the enrollment guide. ADOA expects to mail Enrollment Guides by October 15, 2011. Here are five questions for you to consider as you review the Enrollment Guide: 1. What is new this year? Make sure you understand changes in relevant plans. What would the plan cost me? In addition to premiums, be sure to consider co-insurance, co-pays, and any deductibles that may apply. For this consider your recent history of health services. Remember, co-pays can add up quickly if you have re-occurring health needs. (Continued on page 4) Arizona State University Retirees Association Prime Times 3 Fall 2011 (Continued from page 3) 2. Next, consider what would happen if you had a worst-case health scenario. Some plans are now offering an out-ofpocket maximum, which may limit your financial exposure. 3. If you are on maintenance medication for a chronic illness check for policies that may limit your total costs. 4. Consider participating in a health coach program. Working with dietary counselor or a wellness coach may improve your health limit your long-term costs. And, be sure that you get your flu shot. Other things to consider before changing plans: 1. Verify your doctors are in network. Also consider your future medical needs. 2. List your prescriptions and price out your costs using formulary rates. 3. Verify your preferred hospitals or clinics are included in network. 4. If you are becoming 65, notify your plan one month in advance. Make sure you get registered for Medicare Parts A & B, but not C or D. 5. If you should decide to switch out of ADOA medical plans, consider retaining your ADOA dental plan so you will have the option of re-enrollment at a future open enrollment. NOTE: ASURA will sponsor a workshop to assist members considering possible changes in ADOA benefits: October 27, 2:004:00 p.m., Community Services Bldg., Room TBA. The ADOA Benefit Expo for the East Valley will be held 9:00-4:00 p.m., November 2, 2011 at the Marriott Buttes, 2000 Westcourt Way, Tempe, AZ 85282. ASURA Seminar Series Investments and Fraud 101 by The Seminar Committee This was the first of many more seminars planned by This new program for our membership was started this the Seminar Committee. year. This was held in the ASU events. Community Services Building. (photos courtesy of Bill Stasi) Many beneficial topics were covered. Some topics involved asking questions about your investments and broker as an aid in becoming a smarter investor. Additional topics covered case studies of corporations individuals may have invested in and resulted in lawsuits. We covered various scams and a form on how to file a complaint with the Arizona Attorney General’s office. We provided many handouts and a DVD. Overall a voluminous amount of information was provided to all who attended. We did not have a standing room only capacity but about 36 individuals attended. All left with a wealth of knowledge and a cookie or two filling both the mind and tummy. We had a drawing and gave away some wonderful swag and interesting items. One Facebook and Other Social Networking Tools by Barry NcNeill The 2nd seminar of the new ASURA Seminar Program is scheduled for Thursday, November 17, 2011 from 1-3 p.m., at the ASU Community Services Building, 300 N. Curry Road, Tempe, in Room 330. Please phone the ASURA office, 480-965-7668, to RSVP. Enrollment is limited and a headcount is needed to provide ample handout materials for all attendees. Presenter: Dr. Carrie Cohill Carrie Cohill is an online faculty member of College of Psychology & Behavioral Sciences at Argosy University, Phoenix Campus. She uses eCollege (web-based course management software) to proactively support all facets of the learning environment and provides education through learning-centered instruction that will enable graduates to fulfill the evolving needs of the marketplace. Dr. Cohill encourages a culture of learning that values mutual responsibility and respect, life-long learning and ethics, as well as personal and professional development. Seminar Outline Many ASURA members have grandchildren in remote locations and, while social networks are a logical way to keep informed about their grandchildren, members are often reluctant to try out these networks. The reluctance is caused by intimidation in getting started (it is so complicated) and also by fears of getting spammed or some other undesirable consequence if they do enroll in the network. The seminar will spend a little time on some background material (e.g., setting up a Facebook account) and then move on to showing how a social network (e.g., Facebook) can be used to accommodate the members’ desires. The seminar will also address some common concerns related to privacy, access to information, and how to guard against potential miss use of the network. Arizona State University Retirees Association Prime Times 6 Fall 2011 ASURA Video History Project Report by Linda Van Scoy In 2010-2011 we completed 7 interviews bringing our present total to 67. Eighteen of those have been conducted with our own video crew: Roger Carter, John McIntosh, Dave Scheatzle and Linda Van Scoy. We made good progress over the summer editing interviews and as a result three additional DVDs are now available for viewing: Milton Glick, Robert Oliver, Paige Mulhollan. The Video History project is looking forward to another year of great interviews. Our committee will meet in October and develop the list of those to be invited for interviews in 2011-2012. We have been going “off site” for interviews because noise from airplane traffic was an issue for our interviews in the CSB building. We were recently made aware there are two sound proof rooms in the basement assigned to the Music Therapy Clinic and they have generously agreed to allow us to schedule recording time as needed. This will make it much easier both for the video crew not to have to haul all our equipment back and forth and also for the interviewees to have easy access and free parking. We are still able to be mobile however, for those interviewees who may have transportation issues or prefer to have their interview in other surroundings. Remember that you can request the DVDs by mail. To order by mail, call, e-mail or write to us to request the DVD you would like to review and we will send it to you by US Mail. Enclosed in each DVD will be a label with the ASURA return address on it. After you view the DVD, return it in the mailer in which you received it, affix the new label to the front (over your address), add postage and drop in the mail. You may also continue to drop by the office and check them out for viewing. Thanks to the VHP committee, Roger Carter, Elmer Gooding, Richard Loveless, John McIntosh, Dave Scheatzle, for their ongoing good work. If you have an interest in this project, particularly in editing or transcribing, we invite you to join the committee. As always we welcome nominations of retired ASU employees for inclusion in the Video History Project. Send your nominations to: ASU Retirees Association Video History Project P. O.
