On November 14, 2017, at a Special Study Session the Dewey-Humboldt Town Council approved unanimously to approve a contract for the employment of Thomas Wilson as Town Manager. Mr. Wilson started his employment at Dewey-Humboldt Town Hall on November 20, 2017. Mr. Wilson was one of five candidates interviewed for the Town Manager position. The City of Palm Springs, CA, where he served as Assistant City Manager for eight years, most recently employed Mr. Wilson. Prior to that, he was City Manager for Milpitas, CA, and previously City Manager at Oceanside, CA. Mr. Wilson’s Arizona experience was gained over nineteen years serving as City Manager and Deputy City Manager of Tucson, AZ, and as the City Attorney and Deputy City Attorney for Scottsdale, AZ, and Tucson, AZ. Mayor Terry Nolan stated that he is impressed with Mr. Wilson’s demeanor and communication skills expressing that the Mayor, Council and Staff are looking forward to working with Mr. Wilson. Mayor Nolan also shared that an Open House is being planned for January to welcome our new Town Manager. Be sure to watch the website and postings for the “meet and greet” date. Mr. Wilson stated, “I am excited about being Dewey-Humboldt’s Town Manager. The Mayor and Council and Staff have a great partnership. I look forward to helping the Town prosper as Arizona’s “best” Country Town.” A NEW WAY TO STAY IN TOUCH WITH YOUR TOWN! The Town of Dewey-Humboldt is starting a new service to residents. Using Constant Contact email marketing software, we will be providing email notices of upcoming events and news, links to important sources of assistance and information, as well as links to the Town’s Newsletter pages. We will keep you abreast of the happenings in the Town, accessible on the go, on any of your devices. We will be maintaining an email list of residents who are interested in receiving these periodic updates. You can add your email by sending the town an email request at info@dhaz.gov, or calling Town Hall @ 928-632-7362. We hope you will enjoy this added service, and look forward to hearing from you about ways we can improve it. PUBLIC WORKS NEWS The Public Works Department applied 130 tons of hot patch this fall repairing potholes and road failures at various locations throughout Town. These repairs are part of the ongoing maintenance that is needed to maintain the integrity of the roads. Staff will resume this work in the spring when materials are available. As we move into winter, Staff would like to remind everyone that the Town does have snow removal equipment. If snow removal is needed, we will start and focus on the main collector/feeder roads throughout Town. Then we will work into the smaller neighborhood roads, getting to all the roads as quickly as possible. When we have advance warning, please keep vehicle parking to a minimum on the roads for the safety of all Town residents and Staff. Comm Dev—Cont. COMMUNITY SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH PROJECT ADDRESSES FOOD SAFETY AND SECURITY IN ARIZONA What is Project Harvest? THE TOWN OFFICES WILL BE CLOSED IN HONOR OF THE MLK HOLIDAY MONDAY, JANUARY 15, 2018 COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT CORNER FREE WELL WATER TESTING IS AVAILABLE AGAIN! Responding to an overwhelming demand following the first two rounds of well water testing kit program, The Town of Dewey-Humboldt is offering to Residents of the Town, who have not previously participated, free testing of drinking water sampling from local Residents’ well systems. While they last (first come-first served), sample bottles can reserved in advance, for pickup at Town Hall from 8:00 am till 12:00 pm from Wednesday, February 21, 2018 through Friday, February 23, 2018. Residents are encouraged to return the filled bottles the day they are picked up, but they must be returned by 12:00 pm on Friday, February 23, 2018 in order to be transported to Nortest Analytical Laboratories, in Flagstaff, for testing. Nortest Laboratories will email the results directly to participating Residents, when testing is completed. Dr. Mónica Ramírez-Andreotta, assistant professor in the University of Arizona Department of Soil, Water and Environmental Science (SWES), is leading a study designed to work alongside rural and urban gardeners to analyze the safety and quality of water collected through rainwater harvesting systems. The project entitled, “Advancing Informal STEM Literacy & Learning: Co-Created Citizen Science Rainwater Harvesting in Underserved Communities” will be funded for five years (2016–2021) through the National Science Foundation. For short, the program is called Project Harvest. Rainwater harvesting is legal in Arizona and known to prevent soil erosion in semi -arid regions, control storm water runoff, and is a form of water conservation and environmental stewardship. To the best of our knowledge, this is one of the first comprehensive studies in the state of Arizona investigating the quality of harvested rainwater and its potential effects on soil and plants. Project Harvest is a co-created citizen science project! Together, we will monitor the quality of harvested water, soil, and plants while learning more about our environmental health. As a participant, you will: 1. Learn how to collect samples from your garden for analyses. 2. Learn about potential pollutants (microorganisms, inorganics/ metals, and organic compounds) that might impact soil, plant and human health. 3. Meet others in your community who are interested in environmental and food quality. How does Project Harvest Work? Using a peer-education model, our University of Arizona research team has trained local community members in Tucson, DeweyHumboldt, Hayden-Winkelman, and Globe/Miami. After completing the 20-hour training in environmental monitoring and sustainability, these educators are now ready to train community members and provide the materials needed to rigorously sample water, soil, and plant samples. After you are trained, you will work with traditional laboratory (LAB) supplies and Do-It-Yourself (DIY) gear to monitor your environment. Sample collection will begin in Winter 2017 and run through Winter 2020. YOU and University of Arizona researchers will analyze samples! Data will be interpreted and shared with all participants yearly. What is my role in Project Harvest? You are part of the team! The work you do, and the samples you collect will be used in a rigorous scientific study to determine the quality of your harvested water, soil, and garden vegetables. As a participant, you will be asked to collect a water sample four times a year; soil and plant samples once a year for three years. Each sampling may take around 30-60 minutes. Your participation will be kept private; every effort will be made to keep your study-related information confidential. Project Harvest is looking forward to sharing and discussing the results with participants yearly. However, participants can decide that they do NOT want their individual results and still participate in the study and receive the summary of results, but not their individual data. Want to learn more about your harvested water, soil and plant quality? Join Project Harvest! We are a horseshoeing supply store that’s a little eccentric. On top of supplying farriers with the products they need and the customer service they deserve, we offer a variety of custom, handmade western décor. From custom made pallet furniture, to hand poured gel candles, metal image cutouts, horseshoe art, hand painted signs, customized turquoise jewelry, and consignment tack and saddles. We have partnered with our great friends at Cactus Creek Leathers, for boot and shoe repair, tack repair and custom leather orders. A family owned and operated business and, believe me, it takes the whole family! My husband, Wylie Preston, and I are the proud parents of four beautiful children, one girl and three boys. 3 Wylie started shoeing horses with his father when he was just a teenager. He loves horses and being his own boss, so much that for 20 plus years that is what he has continued to do. He graduated from Westerns School of Horseshoeing in Phoenix and has built his clientele from the ground up. He has spent years studying the latest in horseshoeing supplies and techniques. Some are nothing more than a gimmick and others are real breakthroughs in the art of horseshoeing. Through the years of running our own farrier business, we saw the need for a supply store in our area that offered great customer service to the guys and also had something the wives . From that, HickCentric Horseshoeing Supply was born and here we are living our dream!
