P&Z—Continued from pg 1 that’s been considered since the building went up for sale, Nystrom said. “There isn’t anything available right now on Main Street, so we’ll broaden our view of what’s possible,” he said. “One of the things we’ll be interested in is waiting longer term and instead of getting into another lease situation, find a more permanent home for both the Museum and a place to carry out the rest of our mission.” COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT CORNER PERMITS ISSUED: The Town’s Building Department issued the following permits in August. This information is to indicate growth in the Community.  Single Family Residence: 0   Manufactured Home: 1 Other: 10 COMMUNITY NEWS MUSEUM CLOSES —FOR NOW Jason Turner, PV Tribune The Dewey-Humboldt Historical Society had to close the Museum after the Old Bank Building, which has housed the Museum since 2013, was sold recently and its lease expired at the end of this month, said Historical Society President David Nystrom. He noted in a previous email that the new owner is not interested in continuing a lease with the Historical Society. Anyone involved with the Historical Society, whether they’re Museum curators, docents or volunteers, will say the Museum was a labor of love, Nystrom said. He added that looking back it’s too bad it has to come to an end, but at the same time, the Historical Society is thrilled at what it was able to accomplish. Currently, the Historical Society is interested in new locations, something LIFECARE AMBULANCE Emergencies happen to everyone. When illness or injury strikes, strike back with a LifeCare Membership. EPA COMPLETES SOIL CLEANUP IN RESIDENTIAL YARDS The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has cleaned up surface soils in 31 residential yards in Dewey-Humboldt. These yards had soils contaminated with lead and/or arsenic from the Iron King Mine/Humboldt Smelter Superfund site. Over many years, lead emissions from the smelter stack, wind-blown tailings from the mine and the smelter, spills from rail loading areas, and use of mine tailings resulted in lead and/or arsenic contaminating a small number of residential yards in DeweyHumboldt. At the end of a thorough study of about 600 residential yards, EPA found about 30 properties with lead (or arsenic) in the surface yard soils at high enough levels to pose an unacceptable health risk. EPA worked with the property owners to obtain permission to clean up the surface yard soils during April-July 2017. EPA’s completion of all cleanup activities of the residential areas should reduce uncertainty about the site contamination with regard to residential properties. In August, EPA published a fact sheet explaining the surface yard soils removal work. This fact sheet was mailed to community members in the Dewey-Humboldt area. EPA will provide letters to impacted homeowners. We will also issue a final report that will summarize this 2017 cleanup in Dewey-Humboldt. Additional information about the Iron King Mine/Humboldt Smelter Superfund site is available at: https://go.usa.gov/xX495. Copies of site-related documents are available at the Dewey-Humboldt Town Library, located at 2735 N. Corral Street in Dewey-Humboldt. EPA continues to regularly update the Town Council on our ongoing work. If you have questions or concerns about EPA activities in Dewey -Humboldt, please contact Yolanda Sanchez at 415-972-3880 or Sanchez.yolanda@epa.gov.
