Goodwin Fire Contained: With the Goodwin fire lurking a few miles south of us the last week of June, it was a stressful week for our community. Thanks to the law enforcement personnel, the state and the federal agencies handling wildland fires, and our local fire fighters, the community saw no significant damage. The Community really came together during the Fire. Sheriff Mascher shared with us that he was very impressed with the level of cooperation from the Dewey-Humboldt community. It made the first responders’ jobs much easier. We also witnessed so many acts of kindness during this crisis: neighbors helping each other, local businesses providing facilities and resources for evacuees, out-of-town donations of food and water. The Town Office remained open throughout the fire and Mayor and Council stayed on top of the firefighting efforts. Town staff is proud to serve such a great community. The Town’s Firewise efforts have caught the Governor’s attention. The Firewise volunteers continue to work diligently to increase awareness of fuel reduction activities and encourage residents to create defensible space. After the fire, more residents are responding to the Firewise effort. In this issue of the newsletter, please find an update of the Firewise activities. Additionally, if you have not registered with the Sheriff’s CodeRED Alert Program, please sign up. You can find a link through the www.ycsoaz.gov or call the Town office at 632-7362 to ask for assistance. 2 The Dewey-Humboldt Newsletter Town Manager Resigns: I was appointed by the Council and have been the Town Manager since January 3, 2012. During the following years, I worked alongside exceptional elected officials, talented employees, passionate residents and many excellent interest groups. Together we have overcome some very challenging times and accomplished many great things for the community. I am grateful for the community and its people. Please accept my heartfelt gratitude to each and every one of you who I have served and worked with. My last day with the Town is August 18, 2017. In the following months, the Town will search for a permanent Town Manager. The vacancy will be posted via the Town website and other venues. If you or anyone you know is interested, please make sure to check the Town website www.dhaz.gov. Town Clerk Selected: Late June, the Town Clerk position became vacant. After nearly a month of searching, Julie Gibson was selected as the new Town Clerk. Julie has been the Town’s Administrative Assistant since February 2016. She was under the former Town Clerk’s supervision and performed many of the Town Clerk’s duties during the absence of the former Town Clerk. Being a Municipal Clerk as her career goal, Julie has attended the Arizona Municipal Clerks’ Institute and is scheduled to attend the state election training. Please congratulate Julie on her new role as the Town Clerk. Julie Gibson can be reached via juliegibson@dhaz.gov or via 632-7362. Dewey Humboldt Burglary Update (provided by Lt. Raiss, YCSO): Between 05/25/17 and 06/28/17, a total of ten different burglaries, attempted burglaries, alarm and theft reports were reported to YCSO. Two of these cases involved theft of property that included cash and credit cards from unsecured vehicles. There are believed to be at least two suspects involved in the vehicle thefts. These are crimes of opportunity as each of the vehicles was left unlocked. The burglary reports were related to commercial businesses in the Humboldt area that included Billy Jacks Bar, Mama’s Kitchen, Tennessee’s Bobs BBQ and the Chevron gas station on two different occasions and an attempt to enter the Dewey-Humboldt Museum. The suspect(s) in these cases physically damaged property by breaking glass doors or accessing secured building by other means. Money was the prime target once again. Several of these burglaries were reported on the same early morning hours. As a result of leads developed by Deputies in the area, at least one suspect was located, interviewed and arrested. Some of the stolen money and property was recovered. The suspect was on juvenile probation at the time of these burglaries and placed back into the custody of juvenile authorities. The suspect admitted his involvement in more than five of the reports. Evidence was recovered to support the suspect’s involvement. Deputies continue to follow up on leads for the identity of others that may be involved. An additional burglary was discovered and reported on June 7, 2017. This burglary occurred at the Chevron Station in Dewey, AZ. The suspect in this matter was determined to be an employee who was arrested and charged for his involvement. COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT CORNER What is a Land Split? The Town of Dewey-Humboldt has adopted a Land Split process to facilitate the division of smaller parcels without the necessity of going through a full subdivision process. A Land Split involves the division of land creating not more than three (3) parcels from a parent parcel that is 2-½ acres or less in area, and where no new street is involved, for the purpose of sale or lease. Calculation of the three (3) splits allowed will be cumulative over the past five (5) years, and the applicant will be required to submit evidence of that history. Proposed Land Splits require a pre-application conference with the Community Development Department to discuss the process to be followed and the requirements to be met. Those requirements will include: 1) Legal description and parcel number; 2) A Land Split drawing, fully dimensioned and prepared to scale; 3) Proposed parcels, with parcels lines fully dimensioned; 4) Any rights-of-way within the property; 5) Locations and dimensions of any existing structures, wells and septic systems. Following approval of the preliminary Land Split drawing, it will be necessary to submit a record of survey of the proposed Land Split produced, signed and sealed by a registered Land Surveyor, and including the recording date, book and page, as well as a certification line for the signature of the Community Planner for the Town. Town Code Section 152 Subdivision Regulations provides for the scope and procedures of “land split”. All proposed land splits that involve lots within a recorded subdivision shall be heard before the Town Council as a revision of the Final Plat. Land divisions that occur without Town approval are considered illegal and will not be recognized for the issuance of building permits even if the split may have been recorded by the County Recorder’s Office. If you are considering “splitting” your property, please first contact the Community Planner at 6327362. PERMITS ISSUED: The Town’s Building Department issued the following permits in June. Carl was known for his tireless dedication to the Dewey-Humboldt Historical Society and Museum, serving most recently as President. Carl volunteered as an Associate Member on the Open Space & Trails Committee and gave his time to countless community causes. It is so hard to believe that Carl is no longer with us, as just a few days ago, he had gathered community members to the steps of Town Hall for the filming of a historical documentary. We will not forget his smile or the pride in his wave on the Town Hall steps. We extend our deepest condolences to Carl’s family. Carl touched the lives of many through his good heart and public spirit - he will be greatly missed!
