Every day Dewey-Humboldt volunteers generously give their time and service to help others. Here is your chance to give back by nominating a deserving individual in Dewey-Humboldt for his or her outstanding service through the Town’s “Volunteer-of-the-Year” program. Who is eligible? The nomination is open to all Dewey-Humboldt residents who have volunteered in 2016. Nominees need to have been volunteers for organizations that directly benefit the citizens of the Town of Dewey-Humboldt. The organization can be Town Council or Town Boards/Commission/Committees, including the P & Z Commission, Board of Adjustment and Open Space and Trail Committee. Volunteers for the Town’s Activity Center, the Town Library, the Historical Society, Humboldt Elementary School and other agencies that have programs benefiting the citizens of the Town of DeweyHumboldt are also eligible. Nomination Process: The process is simple. Nominations can be written on a piece of paper and submitted to Steven Brown at the Town office by 6 p.m. Thursday, July 6, 2017. Only one nomination per paper please. Please state the nominee’s name (who you are nominating), volunteer organization where the nominee volunteered in 2016, and why you believe the individual should be nominated, such as how his/her efforts volunteering in the specific organization have made a profound difference in citizens’ lives. Nomination papers can also be submitted by fax to 928-632-7362 or emailed to stevenbrown@dhaz.gov . Honoree Selection: The Town Manager will form a citizen committee to review the nominations after the nomination period is closed in July. The Committee then makes a recommendation to the Council. Nominees will be judged on their outstanding service to the citizens of Dewey-Humboldt. The Honoree of the “Volunteer-of-theYear” Award, along with all nominees will be recognized by Town Council in July or August. A public picnic will be scheduled along with a formal plaque presentation at a council meeting. This is a wonderful way for the Town to express its sincere appreciation for our volunteers and also a great opportunity for volunteers to inspire others through their stories. The council initiated the program in 2012. The honorees throughout the years are: Pat Mathew (2012); Tom Grimshaw (2013); Betty Comfort, Frank Davidson, Judy Davidson, Sandra Goodwin, and Sue Palacio (2014); Margaret Roberts and Barry Smylie (2015). This year once again, if you know anyone who volunteers in the community, please let the Town know how he/she is doing a great job by nominating him/her. Keep those nomination papers coming in! Contact the Community Planner, Steven Brown, if you have any questions. Town Clerk vacancy: In June, Town Clerk, Judy Morgan, tendered her resignation after 11.5 years of service to the Town. Ms. Morgan has been the longest tenured employee in the Town’s municipal history. The recruitment of the next Town Clerk is currently in progress. The Town hopes to make a selection in July or early August. The Town Clerk’s primary responsibilities include assisting Council and other public body meetings, interacting with the Town Council and other public body members, codification of ordinances, managing records and ensuring public access to records and open meetings. From Mary Franks Don’t know how many of you come from big cities, but life in a small town is much different. Many of us are very community oriented and love small town life. One thing that often is neglected is the participating in community business and activities. We need everyone to support the local stores. We have several new (and older) businesses in this area and whether they succeed or fail is up to all of you. Check them out! Local activities need your help. and support as well. The Friends of the Library host many activities for both adults and children. They need your help and donations to continue to do so. Our Museum is “manned” by knowledgeable volunteers and has many interesting displays and activities. Reading this newsletter and the flyers put out by the Library will keep you informed of what is going on in our little town. Be involved in your community! BLUE HILLS/FOOTHILLS FIREWISE COMMUNITY Grant Funds Available for those seeking to create defensible space around their homes in these areas. The Prescott Area Wildland Urban Interface Commission (PAWUIC) manage a grant fund from Arizona State Forestry for addressing the abatement of wildland fuels adjacent to homes that pose a wildfire threat. The first step in learning if you qualify for the grant funds is to contact Central Arizona Fire and Medical Authority (CAFMA) to request an assessment of your property. CAFMA can be contacted at 928-759-9933. Emergency Access Sought There is currently only one route in or out of parts of the Blue Hills in the event of wildfire or other emergency. D-H Town Council has approved Staff to begin a dialogue with the Bureau of Land Management regarding a potential future emergency ingress/egress into the southernmost area of upper Blue Hills, an area identified as subject to extreme wildfire hazard. Firewise Committee Seeks Firefighting Water Source in Blue Hills Firewise Committee is cooperating with CAFMA in identifying and acquiring a potential ROW into previously land locked CAFMA properties in the Upper Blue Hills. This would establish an emergency water source in our Upper Blue Hills. Volunteer Opportunity - Firewise Assessment Abatement Training Training will be held this fall in Prescott when the current fire season is over. There is one spot still available for this two-day training. Trained volunteers will participate in cooperation with CAFMA and our Blue Hills/Foothills Firewise Committee in assisting our residents in determining fuel abatement for future grants. To volunteer, contact Vickie Wendt at 928-710-9244 Next Firewise Committee Meeting The next meeting will be held at Town Hall on Wed, 7/19/16 at 6:30 p.m. For further information, please call Steven Brown at 928-632-7362 NOTICE OF FIRE BAN Yavapai County Fire Ban Effective Date and Time: June 1st, 2017 at 8:00 A.M. In accordance with Yavapai County Ordinance No. 2012-1, Section V. The Yavapai County Emergency Management Officer has determined that a fire emergency exists in Yavapai County. Board of Supervisor Vice Chairman, Rowle Simmons has signed an interim order to enact a fire ban within Yavapai County. This determination is based upon the implementation of fire restrictions by the following jurisdictions: Prescott National Forest, Bureau of Land Management, Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management, and local fire districts and fire departments. The restrictions are due to recent wildland fire activity in the area and the combination of windy conditions and warmer temperatures which are quickly drying out the tall vegetation which has grown over the spring months. These conditions create the potential for a large fire event. The fire ban covers the unincorporated areas of the County. Each fire department or fire district has the authority to apply fire restrictions for their respective jurisdiction. Please check with your local fire jurisdiction for more information. The county ban prohibits all open fires and campfires. Fireworks and other pyrotechnic displays are expressly prohibited. Other types of outdoor fires banned are those that produce open flames such as lamp oil in tiki lamps. The ban also prohibits the outdoor use of equipment that generates open flames or a spark. This restricts the use of welding equipment and chain saws. Variances for businesses however, can be requested. The determination includes the following Fire Ban Zones: All of Yavapai County to include the Central Zone, Southern Zone, Northern Zone, and Eastern Zone. Yavapai County fire ban information can be obtained at www.regionalinfoalert.org or www.facebook.com/ YCOEM. “Know before you go” for current information on fire restrictions please visit: www.wildlandfire.AZ.gov or www.firerestrictions.us or by calling 1-877-864-6985. Firewise is a great program assisting homeowners to create defensible space and reduce fire risk. You can find more information about Firewise at www.firewise.org. As a certified Firewise USA community, the Blue Hills and the Foothills neighborhoods together have formed a Firewise Board. The Committee meets once a month. In fact, in this issue of the newsletter, you can read about what the Firewise Board has done lately. Although it is not a council-appointed board, Firewise is committed to continuing the Firewise effort which would benefit the entire town and our surrounding communities. The Firewise Board and the Blue Hill/Foothills Firewise program needs volunteers. If you are interested, please call Steven Brown at 632-7362 or Vickie Wendt at 710-9244.
