The Public Works Department would like to ask our residents to call 928-632-7362 and ask for Ed Hanks, Public Works Director. All ROW related work orders are scheduled through Ed. It is not a good idea to stop a town employee who works in the field as they are often on a job that require full attention for safety reasons. Additionally, there are many contractors who could be hired by the Town or private property owners or the utility companies to do work along the ROWs. Sometimes it is difficult to know whether the person you report a problem to works for the Town or will relay the message. To ensure your concern being reported to the Town, the best way is to call Town Call directly. On the other hand, many citizens recognize the two employees that work in the Public Works Department who are under Ed’s supervision. They are Todd Hamilton and Troy Mofatt. Council has agreed to hire one additional employee (and purchase more heavy equipment) so that the department can handle more in-house work. In the following months, the Town is going to issue all Public Works Department employees uniform shirts, so that they can easily be recognized. As such, if you happen to speak to one of them, you would be able to identify that they are Town employees (and know who they are). Further, the Public Works Director has been searching for ways to employ technology to improve efficiency and effectiveness of his department. The Department has located a software that would allow field employees to report ROW issues through their cell phones. This software also provides the feature of reporting a road concern online, which will roll out once the Town’s new website is up and running (yes, the town is work- ing on a new website as the old one is out of date and running out of security protection). It is our hope that the Public Works uniform and the new operation software will enhance accountability and improve efficiency. We are all looking forward to the change. If you have any questions about these upcoming changes or anything else related to the roads, or if you want to meet Todd, Troy, or Ed, please feel to call Ed Hanks, Public Works Director, at 632-7362. Call for Volunteer of the Year Nomination: Dewey-Humboldt Vol- unteer of the Year (2016) Process Begins Every day DeweyHumboldt volunteers generously give their time and service to help others. Now here is your chance to give back by nominating a deserving individual in Dewey-Humboldt for his or her outstanding service through the Town’s Volunteer-of-the-Year program. Who is eligible? The nomination is open to all Dewey-Humboldt residents who have volunteered in 2016. Nominees need to have been volunteers for organizations that directly benefit the citizens of the Town of Dewey-Humboldt: the organization can be the Town Council; Town Boards/Commission/Committees, including the Planning and Zoning Commission, and Open Space and Trail Committee; Volunteers for the Town’s Activity Center; the Town Library; the Historical Society; Humboldt Elementary School; Meals on Wheels and other agencies that have programs benefiting the citizens of the Town of DeweyHumboldt are also eligible. Nomination Process: The process is simple. Nominations can be written on a piece of paper and submitted to Steven Brown at the VOTY—Continued on page 2 2 The Dewey-Humboldt Newsletter Town office by 6 p.m. Thursday, July 6, 2017. Only one nomination per paper please. Please state the nominee’s name (who you are nominating), volunteer organization where the nominee volunteered in 2016, and why you believe the individual should be nominated, such as how his/her efforts volunteering in the specific organization have made a profound difference in citizens’ lives. Nomination papers can also be submitted via email to stevenbrown@dhaz.gov or faxed to 928-632-7365. Honoree Selection: The Town Manager will form a citizen committee to review the nominations after the nomination period is closed in June. The Committee then makes a recommendation to the Council. Nominees will be judged on their outstanding service to the citizens of DeweyHumboldt. The Honoree of the “Volunteerof-the-Year” Award, along with all that have been nominated, will be recognized by Town Council in July or August. A public picnic will be scheduled along with a formal plaque and certificate presentation at a Council Meeting. This is a wonderful way for the Town to express its sincere appreciation for our volunteers and also a great opportunity for volunteers to inspire others through their stories. The Council initiated the program in 2012. Here are the previous honorees throughout the years: Pat Mathews (2012); Tom Grimshaw (2013); Betty Comfort, Frank Davidson, Judy Davidson, Sandra Goodwin, and Sue Palacio (2014); Margaret Roberts and Barry Smylie (2015). This year, once again, if you know anyone who volunteers in the community, please let the Town know how he/she is doing a great job by nominating him/her. Keep those nomination papers coming in! Kindly contact the Community Planner, Steven Brown, if you have any questions. on July 1, 2017. Residents often decide to take on some projects around their properties, such as home additions, porches, sheds, driveways, etc. Please be aware that most projects will require some kind of permit. Even driveways require a permit once they enter the Public Right of Way. The purpose of the permitting requirement is to protect the safety and welfare of your property and the community. If you are planning to do work on or around your house, please contact the Town Office with project details first. Town staff will help you determine any permitting requirements. Taking this simple step may prevent unexpected cost and headaches for all concerned parties during your improvement project. PERMITS ISSUED: The Town’s Building Department issued the following permits in April. Stay tuned for further development! From Sandy Geiger, 575-21- 4069 sandy.geiger@gmail.com, For years the community of Dewey-Humboldt has enjoyed access to Humboldt Elementary School’s playground and adjacent areas which provide open space to play or relax, recreation equipment, a baseball diamond, a variety of trees still in their infancy, and a nature trail winding through yucca, cholla, prickly pear, wildflowers and other native plants. Adjacent to the playground is an extensive garden area with raised beds where flowers, fruits and vegetables are grown and students are invited to participate in their planting, care or harvesting. Last spring, a Campus Beautification Committee was established to create gardens and natural outdoor spaces near the classrooms. All this led up to……. Good news! Humboldt Elementary was selected for the Schoolyard Habitat Partnership with the Highlands Center for Natural History. This program is a partnership between the Highlands Center and local schools that provides a supplementary science curriculum in a unique outdoor classroom. Over the course of 3 years, a native habitat space will be constructed on the school grounds, a K-6 standards-based curriculum implemented and teachers provided opportunities for professional development. Also, Humboldt Elementary was selected as a rainwater harvesting demonstration site as part of a 5 year, $2.26 million dollar grant authored by Dr. Monica RamirezAndreotta, University of Arizona, to help our local school and community analyze the safety and quality of collected rainwater and its effect on soil and plant quality. This is a Citizen Science project addressing environmental health and water conservation. Planning began on May 3. On May 6th Humboldt Elementary School’s garden, native habitat and DEWEY-HUMBOLDT DOCUMENTARY During the first week of July the Dewey-Humboldt Historical Society will begin filming a documentary of our area. They will have a licensed drone pilot who will take a professional video of specific historic sites in both Dewey and Humboldt which will include downtown Humboldt, Mortimer Farm, the King Woolsey ruins, the smelter and areas in the Bradshaw Mountains. The video will be interspersed with historic archival pictures of the area being photographed. The documentary will be a ten to fifteen-minute history of the area, and it will be shown to visitors at the Museum on Main Street in Humboldt. During the filming, additional detailed footage of the smelter area and the King Woolsey ruins will be taken for the Historical Society archives. Where the drone will be flown over private property, the owners will be notified prior to filming and permission to film will be secured. One of the events to be featured in the documentary is the annual Agua Fria Festival. The Historical Society is trying to locate historic records of this event. If you have historic film footage or pictures of this event and would like them to be considered for this documentary, or if you have questions regarding the project, please call Carl Marsee at (928) 2029410.
