Charlotte September is full of exciting activities in Dewey-Humboldt. The popular “Clean Up” program is back with an extended schedule from Wednesday Sept. 7 to Saturday Sept. 10. The Well Water Testing Kits are available again to pick up at town hall from Sept. 12 to Sept. 14. Please call to reserve your kit. We have events in Sept. to celebrate completion of a couple of projects – Green Gulch Trailhead at the end of Newtown Ave. and the Traffic Light at the corner of Main St. and Hwy 69. Both projects were made possible by partnerships among federal, state and local agencies. Volunteers and private contributions are also an integral part of these projects. A Volunteer Work Day / Grand Opening for the Trailhead is scheduled for the morning of Saturday, Sept. 10. The Dedication for the Traffic Light will be on Monday, September 19 at 10 am. You will find all information in this newsletter. If you need additional information, please call Town Hall at 6327362. Happy September! Traffic Signal Dedication For many years the Town Council petitioned tirelessly for the installation of a traffic signal at Main Street and Highway 69. In 2014, after a traffic study, ADOT determined the intersection warranted a signal. Installation of the signal started in June 2016 and it went live on Thursday, July 28, 2016. On Monday, September 19, 2016, at 10:00 a.m., the public is welcome to join the Dewey-Humboldt Mayor and Town Council, ADOT, CYMPO representatives, and other dignitaries in celebrating the dedication of the new signal at Main Street and Highway 69. It will be held generally at the location of the light, near Town Hall on Main St. and S.R. 69. Green Gulch Trailhead Volunteer Day and Opening Ceremony The Trailhead at the end of Newtown Road has been completed and is open for business! Prescott National Forest has named the trailhead “Green Gulch Trailhead”. This trailhead is the work of the Open Space and Trails Committee (as directed by Dewey-Humboldt Town Council), Prescott National Forest Staff and Town Staff. A Work Party Volunteer Day and Ribbon-Cutting is scheduled for Saturday, September 10th. The Work Party will be from 8 am – 11:30 am, with lunch provided. Opening Ceremonies will start at 1:00 pm. If you are interested in participating in the work party, please RSVP to Jason at 928-777-2220. See you there! Free Well-Water Testing is available again!! Clean-up continued from page 1 Library Summer Program. The Council is considering reinstating the Board of Adjustment. Boards of Adjustment were created to provide a means to deal with unanticipated hardships as they arise with issues of zoning. In general, a Board of Adjustment is quasi-judicial, not a policy-making body. The Board interprets the meaning and spirit of the zoning ordinance as enacted by the governing body by hearing and deciding on variance applications when they arise. It does not have the authority to make law or change zoning law. The Board meets when applications for variances or appeals occur and is not expected to meet regularly as some other Town Boards, Commissions and Committees. Special training meetings may be held once the board is formed to provide adequate knowledge for the board to perform this function. Town Code Section 153.021 outlines the structure, the powers and duties and the Board of Adjustment. Town Council has been performing the duties of the Board of Adjustment since 2012. Ideally, the Council would like to appoint a 5-person volunteer board to serve as the Board of Adjustment. If you are interested in serving in this capacity, please contact town hall at 632-7362 and complete an application for this board. Town Clerk Judy Morgan, Town Planner Steven Brown, or Town Manager Yvonne Kimball can help you if you have any questions about serving on the Board of Adjustment. The kids read over a seven week period for 1,485 hours this year, a record for our library. The old record was 1,001 hours set last year, when we also had 53 children sign up. The kids won great prizes for reading at the 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25 hour levels. A staggering 73.6% of them (39 kids) read for at least 10 hours, another record. 25 of the children read all the way to the top prize level of 25 hours, another amazing record! 10 of those kids read at least 50 hours, a further record. Our top three readers were Jesse Hudson (100 hours read) and Trena Hudson (also 100 hours) who both won a $25 gift card to Harkins Theater and Brandon Hans (a staggering 170 hours read, tying last year’s record for the top reader) who won a $50 gift card to Harkins Theater! Those reading at least 15 hours were invited to our Amazing Pizza Party, which Guido’s Pizza donated seven pizzas for. We had 32 of the 37 eligible children in attendance, and a total of 49 people at the party when adding in parents and vol- unteers.
