The Town concluded 2014 by commemorating its 10th year incorporation anniversary on December 2, 2014, and on the same day the newly elected Mayor and three council members were sworn into offices. Looking into the New Year, the Town has a few planned projects to continue on. In July 2014 the Town brought back in-house the operation of Building Permitting, Plan Review and Inspection Services; in 2015, Town Staff will continue to improve the operation under the Building Official/Inspector Joe Janusz who is replacing the retiring former Building Official/Inspector Terry Ford. Additionally, the 2012 International Building Codes (Icodes) adoption efforts will continue and we hope for its adoption through an ordinance and implementation early in 2015. The Town also has the tasks of “animal code” review, “accessory dwelling unit ordinance”, and “zoning set-back” research to work on. The Council and the Planning and Zoning Commission will be having a joint meeting on January 8, 2015 on these issues. Staff has been working on strengthening internal procedures, revising the forms, and creating some informational pamphlets to enhance customer service and empower the public with information about Town operation. We are hopeful that we can launch some pamphlets and an updated website in 2015. As many of you are aware, the Town is eligible for Community Development Block Grant funds of approximately $260,000 and has a few possible projects to consider to benefit eligible neighborhood(s) in Town, utilizing the fund in 2015. The Public Works Department will continue working on improving the townowned roads by focusing on drainage upkeep and regular maintenance of the town-owned roads. In 2015 I am continuing the “Coffee with Town Manager” program but changing the date to the second Monday of each month (instead of the first Monday of each month) to make it more convenient for residents to attend. In January, “Coffee with the Town Manager” will be on January 12, 2015 at 9 am. I wanted to thank those who have participated in the program. I hope to see everyone in 2015. In closing, l would like to wish the residence of Dewey-Humboldt a safe and prosperous New Year in 2015. DEWEY-HUMBOLDT’S 10-YEAR ANNIVERSARY Despite the blustery weather, approximately 50 people attended the celebrate of our 10th Anniversary as a Town. The Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office Color Guard and Humboldt Elementary School Band opened the celebration with a posting of colors. Mayor Nolan thanked the current and past Council Members, Commissioners, and Staff, and introduced other local dignitaries, to the crowd. Councilman McBrady gave a history of the area, and Council members Williams-Rowe and Alen made brief comments before we adjourned inside to warm up and share some birthday cake, wassail and live music, performed by the Brush Arbor Revival band. Between November 3rd and the 15th, 2014, the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office received numerous reports of vandalism involving spray painted graffiti around the Dewey-Humboldt community. Incident locations include a Baptist church on Highway 69, the Humboldt Elementary School, US Post Office, activity center, library and other private properties. Background - In late November, a YCSO deputy began looking into a series of tagging/graffiti vandalism incidents throughout his patrol area. After reviewing a series of reports, the deputy noticed the graffiti markings appeared similar in type, style, and color, indicating a single “author” willing to vandalize properties in town including a church and school. During follow-up, the deputy recalled prior contact with a 17-year-old disorderly juvenile a month earlier that lives near the church that had been vandalized. The deputy was able to find several social media sites connected to this juvenile and saw images similar to or an exact representation of the graffiti seen throughout town. The juvenile also made ongoing reference to drug use on these sites. A records check indicated the juvenile was also on active probation. Based on the investigation, the deputy was able to obtain a search warrant for juvenile’s home which was served Friday, December 5th. The juvenile/suspect answered the door and was detained. During a search of the suspect’s home, deputies found evidence linking him to graffiti crimes throughout Dewey-Humboldt along with items indicating ongoing drug use/possession. In the presence of his probation officer, the suspect admitted to the multiple vandalism cases and drug use. The suspect was transported to and booked at the Prescott Juvenile Detention Center on the indicated charges. IN MEMORY Richard Keith McCahill Patricia Sovern Gone But Not Forgotten THE HUNGRY KIDS PROJECT The Hungry Kids Project’s mission is to prepare our students to learn by eliminating childhood hunger in Humboldt Schools. Remarkable volunteers, coordinated by Med and Anita Wulf, have taken on the task of providing weekend food bags to foodinsecure students at Humboldt Elementary and Bradshaw Mountain Middle Schools. Weekend food is packed every Friday at Humboldt Elementary and discreetly distributed to those students facing food insecurity. Students are provided 2 breakfasts, 2 lunches and 2 dinners over the weekends, while school is in session. All purchases, packing and distribution of the food packs are done by volunteers. It cost @$6.50 per bag to feed a child for the weekend. With adequate nutrition, kids can return to school on Monday well-nourished and ready to learn.
