As many Dewey-Humboldt residents know, one of our neighbors has achieved a “first” for the State of Arizona and the Town of Dewey-Humboldt. Mr. Joe Preston was elected 2014-2015 President of the Lions Clubs International. I met Joe Preston and his wife Joni, a fellow Lion, when I first became the Town Manager. I was visiting a D-H Lions Club meeting. Joe had just returned from a Lions Clubs International function where he was representing our area. He struck me as a humble and compassionate individual. Two and half years later, I was thrilled to hear of Joe being elected President of Lions Clubs International. Upon release of the news, I received phone calls from community members expressing their excitement of this event. Bob Greene, a former D-H Mayor and a D-H Lions Club member, felt that Joe’s presidency has earned global recognition for the Town of Dewy-Humboldt. Judy Davidson, a Dewey-Humboldt resident who is an avid volunteer in our community and a former DH Board of Adjustment member, told me that she was with Joe and Joni when Joe was installed as the President for Lions Clubs International. Judy was in tears when Joe received the honor. “It was a moving moment seeing Joe being named the President.... Joe surprises me. As busy as he is, he always participates in the D-H club meetings and functions when he is in town. He is a great man,” Judy shared. I agree it is a magnificent achievement for Mr. Preston. As the Town Manager for DeweyHumboldt, I am so very proud of him, as I am for his hometown, for which I serve. Mr. Preston comes from our community and represents the overall D-H citizenry who are hard-working, passionate and caring for the good causes. Please allow me to cheer for Joe and his extraordinary accomplishment. Mr. Joe Preston’s biography and achievements can be found at Lions Clubs International’s website www.lionsclubs.org and the Daily Courier newspaper website www.prescottaz.com. From the Town Clerk’s Office—The Primary Election is fast approaching (August 26th). The Town is holding a candidate election on this ballot for the Mayor and three Council seats. For the names of the seven candidates running for these four seats go the Town’s website at www.dhaz.gov and click on the home-page “Election” link. COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT CORNER GRADING OF A LOT By Terry Ford, Building Official/Inspector Grading occurs on a lot when the vegetation and/or the soil is moved or removed from a lot or materials are imported to a lot. Grading can cause a multitude of problems. The existing native vegetation on the lot helps prevent erosion of soil, removing that vegetation can cause erosion problems. The moving of soil on a lot may also cause erosion and drainage problems on an adjoining property. Even minor grading can change the way water drains across your property, which can cause erosion problems for a neighbor (and liability for you). The Town Grading Ordinance (Town Code Section 150. 09) addresses grading procedures extensively. It states that you cannot cause erosion, cannot change the course of water drainage, and that concentrated drainage shall be contained on site or directed to an approved drainage. Prior to any grading please contact the Town Hall to get the required permit. To apply for a grading permit, you must submit an application and two sets of plans. If complicated, the plans may need to be prepared by a licensed engineer. Call our Building Official, Terry Ford, at 632-7362 for more information. 2 The Dewey-Humboldt Newsletter COMMUNITY NEWS: DHHS OLD WEST DAY CELEBRATION To kick off the Dewey-Humboldt Historical Society’s Annual Old West Day Event, a contest was held among local area school students to design an Admission Button.
