The activity is to install ground water monitoring wells in support of the Iron Continued on pg 4 May has been an incredibly busy month in Town Hall. Many meetings and discussions abound with projects on the horizon. Council has embarked on the Fiscal Year 15 Budget discussions by reviewing lineby-line in the budget worksheet. Several meetings have been held on the budget while the discussion will continue into June. According to state law, an expenditure estimate has to be adopted by the Council which sets the ceiling of next year’s expenditures. In FY15, the State issued expenditure limitation for the Town is approximately $4.14 million. The Town has never exceeded the expenditure limitation and will remain below the expenditure limitation in FY15. Since February, there have been regular postings in the newsletter regarding the Volunteer of the Year (VotY) Program. After a few months of preparation, the Council recently acknowledged the Volunteer of the Year nominees and decided to honor these nominees and all other unsung heroes in our community at a June Council Meeting and a July or August Community Cook-Out. For the year of 2013 Volunteer of the Year program, the Town received 7 nominations: Lydia Chapman, Treesha deFrance, Bob Greene, Sandra Goodwin, Tom Grimshaw, Mike Nathe and Jeff Spohn. The 2013 Volunteer of the Year goes to Tom Grimshaw. In addition to expressing our gratitude to those who participate in the program, I wanted to thank Town Accountant Deni Thompson for her coordi- nation of the program on my behalf. The Town Clerk/Election Officer has made the official Call of Election. According to the Call of Election, the town must begin the process of election or reelecting a Mayor for a 2-year term and three council members for 4-year terms. The terms of Mayor Nolan, Council members Hamilton, McBrady and WilliamsRowe are ending at the end of 2014. The Primary Election will be August 26, 2014, and any candidate receiving a majority of all votes cast at the Primary Election will be declared elected without running at the General Election. If a General Election is needed, it will be held on November 4, 2014. Candidate Packets have been made available at Town Hall. The voter registration deadline for the Primary Election is July 28, 2014. If you have questions regarding the election, please contact Town Clerk/Election Officer, Judy Morgan, at 632-7362. With the Election season approaching, political signs will be appearing. Town Code Section 153.128 Exempt Signs stipulates that “political signs” can be installed 60 days prior to election and are to be removed within 15 days of last day of vote casting. The signs can be no bigger than 16 square feet (residential) or 32 square feet (commercial/industrial). If you have questions about political signs, please call the office at 632-7362. Town Public Works Department is having the Town’s first Welcome Sign installed near the intersection of Hwy. 69 and Third St. It is anticipated to be completed in June. The Public Works Department has also been installing park equipment donated by the Agua Fria Festival Committee at Butte St. Park. We can expect the completion of the project this month. The equipment will be a nice addition to the park. Please come enjoy what the little park has to offer. In addition to the above installation projects, the Department has planned some road work in June and July. In the 2 The Dewey-Humboldt Newsletter next few weeks, the annual Chip Sealing/Fog Coating will occur on the roads that have met the maintenance scheduling. The roads totaling 6.4 miles are Wicklow Road, Cranberry Road, (from Wicklow east to Smoki Trl.), Smoki Trail, Acoma Trail, Antelope Drive, Dewey Road (from Kachina Pl. to end of blacktop), Deer Path, Clearview Drive, Tanya Boulevard, Rancho Pl. (from East Bradshaw to Lazy River Dr.), Lazy River Drive (from Old Black Canyon Hwy. to end of black top), Main Street, Huron Street, Humboldt Street, Hill Street, and Kloss Avenue (from Hwy. 69 to end of black top). Additionally, Foothill Dr. Drainage Improvement Project, which is funded largely by Yavapai County Flood Control District, will begin construction in June. Please be aware of all the roadwork when you drive through various construction zones in Town. On the Community Development Department side, I am working on the Building Safety in-house transition. Additionally, as many of you are aware, the Community Development Coordinator (CDC) has been out of the office for a few weeks. We want to wish the employee well. Meanwhile, the variety of duties performed by the CDC have been covered by available staff members. Judy Morgan and Cathy Jackson are handling permitting and general planning and zoning questions. Ed Hanks is handling the code enforcement activities. We are planning to bring in some temporary help in the next few weeks. Meanwhile, I need to take this opportunity to express my sincere gratitude to all the employees in Town Hall – they have been phenomenal in this difficult and hectic time; it is truly the team work that enabled the operation to carry on. One last announcement on town employees is that the Town’s Administrative Assistant, Mandi Garfield, has left us to move on in her life. We wish her success in her next endeavor. The Town is likely to fill the Administrative Assistant position in June. Interested persons can find the hiring information on the town website when it is available. As always, if you would like additional information about town affairs, please contact me. The coffee with the Town Manager is the first Monday of each month at 9 a.m. I look forward to speaking with you. PIONEER DAY AT HUMBOLDT ELEMENTARY SCHOOL The second annual Pioneer Day sponsored by the DeweyHumboldt Historical Society at Humboldt Elementary School was a success once again and enjoyed by all. There were Prospectors, Blacksmith, Rough Riders, Weavers and Spinners, rocks and old pictures of the area to identify, puzzles and games, old pioneer tools and miner’s equipment that were needed by the prospectors to find their fortune of gold, silver and copper; all were greeted by the students with great enthusiasm! The leather stamping was fun for all and learning to write Cowboy Poetry with J.P. Gorham was absolutely amazing. After lunch the students went on the Guided Walking Tour with members of the Historical Society. They learned of the different landmarks and buildings throughout Humboldt. This became a memorable part of the students’ day to learn the history of Humboldt. A thank you goes out to all volunteers and to Bart Brush, Music Teacher at Humboldt Elementary and coordinator of Pioneer Day. Looking forward to next year!
