PROPOSED ORDINANCE 14-104 REGARDING ACCESSORY DWELLING UNITS By Yvonne Kimball, Town Manager By Yvonne Kimball, Town Manager In last month’s newsletter we informed the citizens of the Town of DeweyHumboldt about the start of the upcoming “Volunteer of the Year (2013)” program. Many of you know an individual that has given and shown outstanding service to this community during 2013. Show your support and take this opportunity to help us recognize those individuals and show our appreciation for their gift of service by nominating them for this outstanding award and recognition. All nominees will be recognized with one being named “Town of DeweyHumboldt 2013 Volunteer of the Year”. Nominations may be submitted no later than 5:00 pm Thursday, April 10, 2014, to Cathy Jackson at the Town Office—written on a single piece of paper, by email to DeweyHumboldt@dhaz.gov or faxed via 632-7365. Only one nomination on each paper please. Each nomination must state the nominee’s name; the name of the volunteer organization; a description why you believe the individual you nominated has made a profound contribution in our citizens’ lives. In addition, the Town is now accepting requests for the VotY Selection Committee to review and select the “2013 Volunteer of the Year” award recipient after the nominations close on April 10th. Interested individuals please contact Deni Thompson at 632-7362, fax 632-7365 or denithompson@dhaz.gov. The Town has been having discussions regarding accessory dwelling units, secondary medical dwelling units and guest homes since 2008. In April 2012, the Town Council tasked the Planning and Zoning Commission (P&Z) to clean up the language in the current town code regarding the above. The goal is to consolidate the existing definitions and regulations and also ensure consistency throughout the Planning and Zoning code. To that end, P&Z and staff met publicly since May 2013 to discuss this issue. After over seven months of work, the task was materialized through the proposed Ordinance 14-104 regarding Accessory Dwelling Units. Although no comments were received at the P&Z Public Hearing in February, the Town received questions and concerns at the Public Hearing at the council meeting. Some concerns are based on an inaccurate understanding of the proposed ordinance. For example, many citizens were concerned that the proposed ordinance would eliminate medical dwelling units; yet the proposed ordinance would allow medical dwelling units through accessory dwelling unit regulation. The Town greatly appreciates our citizens’ participation in the discussion of the proposed ordinance. Town staff would like to invite concerned citizens to contact the Town Manager and/or the Community Development Coordinator with your questions and concerns about the proposed ordinance. The direct way to find out what you can or cannot do under the proposed ordinance is to speak to the Town staff. Communication with staff would eliminate any unnecessary concerns and also help the Town to come up with an ordinance that would best address the town’s issues. Continued on page 2 2 The Dewey-Humboldt Newsletter Call us at ADU—Continued from page 1 632-7362 to discuss the proposed Accessory Dwelling Units ordinance. Once we hear from our citizens in the coming weeks, Town staff plans to have more discussions with the P&Z Commission and the Council on the subject.
