2010 ANNUAL REPORT LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Members and Friends: Fiscal year 2009-2010 has been an exciting year. AHS Central Division staff did an outstanding job working with the Sandra Day O’Connor family on an exhibit that opened at the AHS Museum at Papago Park in Tempe in conjunction with the dedication of the Sandra Day O’Connor House. AHS Southern Division staff collaborated with Apache tribal entities throughout the state and across the Southwest to complete the exhibit, Geronimo! Revered and Reviled, at the Arizona History Museum in Tucson. Everyone involved was proud of the result. AHS Administration staff worked with Arizona State Parks to develop an Interagency Service Agreement that allows AHS to lease and operate the Riordan Mansion State Historic Park in Flagstaff. The Riordan Action Network supports the three-year agreement. AHS Northern Division staff will oversee the facility. In Yuma, the AHS Rio Colorado Division staff celebrated the rich history of the Yuma Crossing with a full complement of re-enactors at Yuma Crossing Day. The Journal of Arizona History continues to be the keystone of AHS Publications Division. Editor Bruce Dinges and the journal’s authors do an excellent job. Bettina O’Neal Lyons’ book, Zeckendorfs and Steinfelds: Merchant Princes of the American Southwest, remains a top seller. The new publication, A Volume of Friendship: The Letters of Eleanor Roosevelt and Isabella Greenway, 1904-1953, edited by Kristie Miller and Robert H. McGinnis, is in its second printing. Malcolm Mackey of Flagstaff received AHS’s highest honor, the Al Merito award, at the ArizonaNevada History Convention in Laughlin, Nevada, on April 16. AHS board committees work hard and continue to provide positive support to staff. Still, our membership is down slightly. We ask you, our members—our best sales people—to invite your families and friends to join AHS. Finally, I want to thank Anne Woosley and a greatly reduced staff for the tremendous job they do in providing the people of Arizona, and our visitors, with outstanding museums, programs, publications, and exhibits. It has been a pleasure serving as your board president during the past two years. Jim Ronstadt President AHS Board of Directors LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Dear Friends: President Ronstadt, in his letter to the membership, has covered the major highlights for the Arizona Historical Society during the previous twelve months. The participation of thousands of people (no kidding!) who enjoyed AHS programs and special events was especially gratifying for the staff and volunteers who made them happen. My own message to you is of a personal nature. Perhaps motivated by the difficult times in which we find ourselves, I have turned to the works of historians and other authors, some of whose books have stood unopened for years on my library shelves, for guidance and a sense of continuity. Even a superficial perusal of the thoughts and writings of Turner (as in Frederick Jackson), Herbert Eugene Bolton, Wallace Stegner, Robert M. Utley, Frederick Merk, Loren Eisley, Stewart Udall, and others reminds us of previous economically, politically, and socially tumultuous times in our nation’s history. From the fundamental upheaval of the Revolutionary era, through the deep chasm of the Civil War, and culminating in the triumph and tragedy of westward expansion, the course of American history has seldom been smooth. But, it has always been about community building. And nowhere has this been truer than in Arizona on its difficult road toward statehood and beyond. If, as someone has said, history is about the lessons of life, the Arizona Historical Society can take pride in the dynamic role it plays as both teacher and learner in today’s world. Promoting National History Day competition; encouraging advocacy and (continued on next page) (continued from previous page) consensus building; providing Arizonans with the opportunity to view an original Declaration of Independence broadside, experience Flagstaff’s Wool and Folk festivals, and interact with the past at Yuma Crossing Day—each of these activities brings together generations and cultures to share and enjoy the delights of history. Reading, learning, and experiencing—history can provide a sense of optimism that not only affords us the strength to weather crisis, but that enables us to make productive decisions, solve problems, and emerge successfully at the other end. History is the force that gives society perspective on the past and hope for the future. Anne I. FINANCIAL OVERVIEW AHS revenues declined slightly (4%) in fiscal year 2009 - 2010. This was in large part due to reductions in state appropriations. However, there were also lower levels of revenues from earned income and donations, reflecting the continued economic conditions both nationally and within the state. In order to continue to manage expenditures in a conservative manner, AHS reduced its spending by 6% during the fiscal year. While this strategy allowed AHS to control its operations, the need for increased revenues continues to be a reality that infringes on the ability of AHS to grow programming.
