METRO is pleased with your
response to the new light
rail system. Your ridership as
well as your feedback is
appreciated during the initial
months of operation.
Help METRO to continue to
provide a safe and comfortable passenger experience with
your acknowledgment of the
customer policies. Please take
note of a few key policies that
will benefit you and your fellow
passengers’ light rail travels:

Eating and Drinking
Eating on board trains or
station platforms is prohibited.
Only non-alcoholic beverages
in screw-top containers
are permitted.

Smoking
Smoking at station platforms
or on board trains is prohibited.

Bicycles
Bicyclists are encouraged to
use the racks in the center
of the train. If the racks are full
or cannot be reached, bicyclists
may stand with their bike
as room permits.
Bicycles, roller blades, skateboards or scooters must be
walked across the platform
and on board trains.
Bicycles secured to station
structures can be confiscated
to METRO Lost and Found.

Priority Seating
Always yield the priority seating
area to seniors and people with
disabilities. This area includes
four spaces for wheelchairs
or scooters inside each vehicle.

Parking
Overnight parking in METRO
park-and-ride lots is prohibited.
A warning will be placed on any
car left overnight. If a car is left
for a second night, it will be
towed at the owner’s expense.
Permits can be issued for
those transit users who work
overnight and wish to use the
park-and-ride facilities, but not
for more than 24 hours. If this
situation applies to you, please
email your information to info@
metrolightrail.org to initiate
the permit process.

Lost and Found
If the found item is of value and
the owner can be readily identified (such as a wallet or purse),
a METRO Rail Supervisor will
attempt to contact the owner.
Other items will be taken
to Lost and Found at Central
Station the following day.
Central Station is located
between Central and
1st avenues on Van Buren.

We can all be proud of building a more sustainable, connected
environment for ourselves and our children as we become
accustomed to riding the light rail.
We have sought to build a system
that will reduce congestion, increase
air quality, provide an additional
great public transit option, and
draw business to our cities. And
we are focused on the long view in
public transportation that supports
the Valley’s continued growth.
One of the less-recognized benefits
of public transit is the sense of
community that grows when people
responsibly share space on the
way to a shared destination.
Riding the light rail with my sons
from Tempe into Mesa to visit
friends, or from Tempe into Phoenix for a concert, I am struck by
how courteous and helpful most passengers are to one another.
Whether waiting for a disabled or elderly person to board,
or helping a cyclist prop a bike in the rack, the majority of riders
seem to understand and adhere to the rules. We need to
encourage all transit riders to become part of this community.
From safety rules we learned in kindergarten, such as looking
both ways before we cross the rail tracks, to helping an
out-of-town visitor with directions to Mill Avenue, light rail is
helping to create an even closer-knit, connected community.
More can be done. We all need to be cognizant of safety, and
we can remind our friends and family members to treat our
joint investment in light rail with respect. No graffiti. No loud
music or rough behavior. No garbage left behind.
It has been my pleasure to serve the past several years on the
METRO Board with our partner cities. Together, we have worked
hard to make the system accessible for everyone. And it appears
from the recent ridership numbers that people across the Valley
have taken responsibility for, and are personally invested in,
continuing our light rail success.

Todos podemos estar orgullosos de construir un ambiente más sostenible
e integrado para nosotros y nuestros hijos mientras nos acostumbramos

Hemos trabajado para poner en marcha un sistema que reduzca el tráfico,
mejore la calidad del aire, represente una gran opción de transporte público

en una visión a largo plazo del transporte público que promueva el
crecimiento constante del Valle.
Uno de los beneficios menos reconocidos del transporte público es el sentido
de comunidad que aflora cuando las personas comparten, de forma responsable, el espacio a lo largo del trayecto que los conduce a un destino común.
Al viajar en el tranvía ligero con mis hijos desde Tempe hasta Mesa para
visitar a unos amigos o desde Tempe hasta Phoenix para asistir a un
concierto, me emociona ver con cuanta cortesía y amabilidad suelen tratarse
la mayoría de los pasajeros. Bien sea esperando por un discapacitado o
un adulto mayor que aborda o ayudando a un ciclista a colocar su bicicleta
en el soporte, la mayor parte de las personas parece entender y respetar
las normas. Debemos invitar a todos los que circulan en las vías a formar
parte de esta comunidad.
Desde las normas de seguridad que aprendimos en kindergarten, como
mirar hacia ambos lados antes de cruzar las vías del tren; hasta indicarle
a un turista cómo llegar a Mill Avenue; el tranvía ligero está ayudando a
crear una comunidad más unida e integrada. Podemos hacer todavía
más. Todos debemos estar conscientes de la seguridad y podemos recordarle a nuestros familiares y amigos que deben tratar al tranvía ligero, fruto

Northwest Extension

The project team continues to refine
transit mode and alignment options
for additional public discussion
scheduled for this spring.

Design is nearly complete on
the first extension of the 20-mile
starter line. The 3.2-mile Northwest
Extension will continue light rail
service further north on 19th
Avenue from the current end-of-line
at Montebello to Dunlap Avenue.
There are three stations planned
at Glendale, Northern and Dunlap
avenues. The park-and-ride
design is still under review, but
is planned for southwest corner
of 19th Avenue and Dunlap.

I-10 West Corridor
The I-10 West extension would
provide high-capacity transit service
to the West Valley. The 50’ median
of I-10 West has been identified as
the recommended alignment west
of the I-17. METRO is conducting
further analysis on the viable routes
east of I-17 to connect with the
20-mile starter line.

Construction is scheduled to
start in summer 2009 for a 2012
opening. Utility relocation work
has already begun in anticipation
of the construction start.

Central Mesa Corridor
METRO and the City of Mesa
continue public outreach efforts for
the Central Mesa corridor project.
The project team will present the
locally preferred transit mode and
route recommendations to the community and Mesa City Council this
spring.

Safety is a responsibility we all share.
Learn how you can stay safe around
light rail.

Be aware of the arrows
METRO intersects 148 intersections
and, on average, each train makes 225
trips per weekday. It is more important
than ever that you remain a vigilant
driver and obey the traffic signals. The
risks are far too dangerous if signals
are ignored or not perceived.
Let’s take a closer look at a signal that
is so key to your safety, yet so often
overlooked: the lighted arrow. You
may only turn across the METRO
tracks from designated turn lanes controlled

by red and green arrows. A lighted
red arrow means that you may not
turn in the direction of the arrow. You
must stop and wait for the green arrow
to appear before making the turn,
even if it appears traffic has cleared.
Remember, running a red arrow has
similar fines, penalties and ramifications as running
a red light.
Right-turn lighted arrows appear
across the system. The expectation
is the same: red means stop. Please
pay close attention to these and all
signals along the light rail route.

Traveler Information Service. It’s simple. By just dialing 511,
you can get information on closures, construction, delays,
public transit services, major airports, tourism, weather and
more. All of this information is available by dialing just three
digits: 5-1-1. You can also visit the website before leaving
home or the office at www.az511.gov.
