he METRO light rail system has officially left
the station, with a groundbreaking celebration
February 15. Instead of a traditional groundbreaking, hundreds of rail supporters turned out at
Tempe Beach Park for a dramatic ceremony to see
the mayors of the METRO system's participating
cities flip a switch to light a full-scale replica of the
future METRO bridge over the Tempe Town Lake.

The bridge will be a special feature of the
METRO light rail system, with a unique lighting
element that will illuminate the bridge with various
light colors and patterns as part of the public art
program.

IN-STREET RAIL CONSTRUCTION
BEGINS ON WASHINGTON STREET

and Washington streets. While work to relocate utilities has been ongoing for more than a year, this is the
first in-street work performed by Valley Metro Rail construction contractors.

active role in helping to minimize construction impacts by
participating in Community Advisory Boards (CABs).

The CABs will be composed of interested business

noise, dust and restricted access. There will be one CAB
for each of the METRO system's five line sections (see
map below). CAB members will evaluate the contractor for
each specified project.

Evaluations will be reviewed and discussed at a monthly
CAB meeting.

requirements of the contract. The amount of any incentives, if any, is at the discretion of each CAB. A total incentive of $2.5 million for the entire 20-mile METRO route will
be available to contractors, with amounts for each line
section based on the mileage within that section.
Incentives will be awarded based on recommendations
from CABs and awarded by Valley Metro Rail.

to award $587 million in federal funds to
the METRO light rail system. The funds were committed by the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) to the
20-mile initial project in an official grant signing ceremony.
