Health Status Report for Board of Supervisors Districts Prepared for the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors By the Maricopa County Department of Public Health Office of Epidemiology and Data Services July 2003 Maricopa County Introduction The following report provides health status information for each Board of Supervisors District in Maricopa County. It includes data for 22 diseases and health indicators as well as information on the size and age distribution of the population. For each disease or health indicator, the following information is provided: • Number of cases in the district • • Rate or percentage of cases in the district • • Example: For every 100,000 residents of District 1, 3.9 have tuberculosis. Rate for Maricopa County (for comparison purposes) • • Example: 24 people In District 1 have tuberculosis. Example: For every 100,000 residents of Maricopa County, 5.1 have tuberculosis. Rate for Healthy People 2010 (for comparison purposes) • The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued goals for the year 2010 for some disease and health indicators. Healthy People 2010 goals are included in this report as “gold standards” or goals for the future. • Example: The Healthy People 2010 goal for tuberculosis is a rate of 3.5 cases of tuberculosis per 100,000 people in the population. All data in this report are for calendar year 2001. Appendix A - Data Notes Population Statistics All data are for calendar year 2001. The overall population estimate for Maricopa County for 2001 is 3,192,125, according to the U.S. Census. This includes a growth rate of approximately 3.9% over the previous year’s figure. In order to estimate the population in each district, Year 2000 figures for each district were obtained from the Maricopa County Board of Elections. The growth rate (approximately 3.9%) was then applied to each district’s 2000 figures. This method assumes that all districts grew at the same rate in the past year, which may or may not represent actual growth rates but serves as a reasonable estimate. Dependency Ratio: In this report, the dependency ratio is the number of people in the district who are under 20 or over 64 years of age divided by the number of people in the district whose age is between 20 and 64. The larger the dependency ratio, the greater the dependence of those usually outside the labor force (less than 20 and over 64 years old) upon those in it (20 to 64 years old). Dependency ratios in other publications may be calculated differently. Geographic boundaries: The 2001 data presented in this report are not completely comparable to those reported for the year 2000. This is because the methodology used to define geographic boundaries was different in the two reports. Zip code boundaries and district boundaries do not always coincide, thus many zip codes cover parts of more than one district. In this 2001 report the data from the following zip codes were divided in a mutually exclusive manner between two districts. 85008 85015 85018 85027 85029 85034 85037 85045 85048 85085 85086 85087 85201 85208 85210 85226 85251 85253 85257 85262 85301 85303 85305 85322 85323 85326 85331 85338 85343 85354 In the previous report the data for the year 2000 for these same zip codes were assigned in their totality to both districts, thus counting these data twice. Health Statistics All data are for calendar year 2001. The category “encephalitis and meningitis” includes amoebic, bacterial, and viral meningitis cases. “Motor vehicle accidents” and “drowning” are subsets of the unintentional injury category. Healthy People 2010: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention provide Healthy People 2010 goals for only some diseases. A “-“ indicates that no goal has been set for that indicator. In contrast, a “0” indicates that the goal is zero. Geographic boundaries: See method used for population statistics, above. For some births, deaths and disease cases, there is no corresponding zip code information. This makes it impossible to assign the birth, death, or disease case to a district. These individuals will appear in the Maricopa County total counts, but not in the counts for any particular district. Appendix B – Total Maricopa County Data 1997-2001 The following graphs show natality, morbidity and mortality information for Maricopa County (all districts combined) for the years 1997 through 2001. All data shown are from the Health Status Report 1997-2001 Preliminary Analysis, published by the Maricopa County Department of Public Health, November 2002. Some changes in mortality rates may be artifactual because the manner of coding certain deaths changed radically with the implementation of ICD-10 in the year 2000. In addition, 1999 population estimates may have been too small.
