The Board manages the affairs of the Association and establishes policies as needed to carry out its mission. Members of the Board are elected for a term of three years and meet monthly during the academic year. You may offer the name of a current ASURA member or your own name as a potential Board member. To be sure that your nominee’s name gets on the ballot, you can submit a petition of nomination bearing the signatures of at least ten current ASURA members. All nominating petitions must be received by January 31, 2017. Send names and/or nominating petitions to: Jim Fordemwalt, Chair 2017 ASURA Board Nominating Committee P.O. There are several changes to report regarding our ASURA office volunteers. We are sorry to say that two of our long-time volunteers are stepping down. Carol Berg has been our Monday morning office volunteer since 2001. Her re-retirement plans are to spend more time with other projects, especially with her dog Daisy. Her cheerful attitude and dedication continues to be a model for all of us. We will miss her but I am sure we will be seeing her at future ASURA events. Carol Moore was an office volunteer with ASURA for 12 years, seven of those as the Office Coordinator. Carol was tireless in keeping the office running smoothly, training volunteers, coordinating schedules, managing files, and reserving rooms. Her attention to detail was amazing. She plans to keep active with ASURA events and possibly return as a substitute volunteer at some point. Linda Van Scoy and Nancy Lesko are now the office Co-Coordinators … it took two of us to replace Carol! We are pleased to welcome three new volunteers to the ASURA office staff this fall. Philomena “Mena” Bell and Carol Schulte will be a team working on Monday afternoons and Linda Whatley will cover the Thursday afternoon shift. Mena retired in January of 2016, Carol 4 years ago and Linda in early 2016. Please take a look at their bios on the ASURA website to learn more of their ASU careers (move cursor to “About Us” and then to “Office Staff”). With the addition of these 3 volunteers, the office coverage is now complete. Office hours for the 2016-2017 academic year are 9:00 am to noon and 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm, Monday through Thursday and closed all day Friday. If you plan to come by the office, it is always a good idea to call first to make sure someone is there to help you. Our office phone number is (480) 965-7668. A more detailed office schedule can be found on page 2 of this issue of the Prime Times. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) did not increase plan funding in order to cover the fee. For the 2017 plan year there is a one-year waiver of the insurer fee; resulting in a lower premium for ASRS Medicare Advantage HMO Plan. ASRS expects the fee to be re-instated for 2018. In a typical year, the impact of the insurer fee on the cost of your health plan is about 3.0% of plan revenue.  Non-Medicare Plans: Five new plan options have been added offering a broader range of lower-cost premium options with slightly reduced benefits. Arizona State University Retirees Association Prime Times 5 Fall 2016 Video History Report - Fall 2016 As we begin our 2016-2017 interview season, most of our interview crew members have returned from their summer trips and have interviews scheduled for this fall. The 2016 Summer Prime Times edition gave an update of interviews (46) that were available at the ASU Library Repository. The following 7 interviews are also available: Mathew Betz, Ellamae Branstetter, Brent Brown, Eugene Grigsby, Dan Jankowski, Clyde Parker, and Richard Peck. To access these videos, visit the following web site: https://repository.asu.edu/collections/199. In the upper right hand corner, click on “sign in”. Scroll down and click on the person’s name whose interview you want to view. A new page will open for that person. On the right side of the page, you will see that person’s interview file on the upper right. Click on ”Download.” The video should begin to play if you have the standard software for playing video. New Video Team Member We are honored to announce that Carl Cross is graciously volunteering his time and expertise by joining the ASURA Video History team. Carl began his library career as a student assistant in Matthews Library in 1964. He was among those who watched Hayden Library take shape and worked there up until his retirement in August 2015. For seven of those years he worked with Alfred Thomas to help create the University Archives collection. In 1989, he was asked to take on the task of cataloging the Arizona state and local documents collection that was only searchable via a KWIC-KWOC printout. This collection is now fully cataloged using a unique classification scheme developed by ASU and the Arizona State Library. As electronic publications became popular, the ASU Digital Repository was created and Carl produced metadata for all the state documents harvested and made available via the internet. He also worked with the Morrison Institute for Public Policy to create an online archive of all their publications. In the spring of 2015, he became the secretary of the Board of Directors for the Arizona Association of Manufactured Home Owners, a non-profit organization that works with a lobbyist to protect their rights through legislation. Carl is also the worship leader for his church and sings with the East Valley Chorale. This marks the sixth year ASURA has subsidized the welcome back kick-off event. A panel of retirees preceded the celebration with a discussion titled: “Things I Wish I Had Known When I Retired”.  Joy Shearman moderated the panel and gave some very interesting insight into retiring …. then returning to work.  Bonnie Scheall gave some personal notes on her work and retirement experiences …. a very reassuring note to ASU retiring staff.  Larry Carlson, who worked in HR and dealt with retirement issues throughout his career, gave excellent advice to new retirees. In all, the session was very thought provoking, helpful and well received. After some initial questions, the 69 attendees enjoyed pizza, beverages, and conversation. Outgoing President, Barbara White, welcomed the guests. Board and Committee Chairs then had the opportunity to announce events planned for the 2016-2017 year. It was also a time to encourage members, new and old, to become involved in ASURA programs.
