In preparing the report the Department of Economic Security (DES) consulted with the state coalition against domestic violence. The reporting system provides information on the population served, the types and usage of the services provided within the shelter, and the unmet needs of persons receiving shelter. The amount of $2.2 million is appropriated from the Domestic Violence Shelter Fund (DVSF), which is 17 percent of the total funds that the DES had available for domestic violence emergency shelters. This shelter fund report is based upon fiscal year 2013 information that is available from the DES statewide contractor reporting system. POPULATION SERVED The total of adults and children, 8,916, received services in 32 shelters located in 13 counties. Of the total number served in emergency shelter, children represent 48 percent. THE SERVICES PROVIDED During the year, 330,999 nights of shelter were provided to adults and children. The shelters provided 176,256 hours of case management, individual and group counseling and legal advocacy. The average length of stay in emergency shelter is 37 days. In addition, 22,824 hotline calls were received during fiscal year 2013. UNMET NEEDS OF PERSONS WHO RECEIVE SERVICES The primary need across the state is child care, housing, and transportation.
