Arizona Department of Economic Security Domestic Violence Shelter Fund Report SFY 2009 (A.R.S. § 36-3007) FISCAL YEAR 2009 DOMESTIC VIOLENCE SHELTER FUND REPORT This report represents data collection under the reporting system pursuant to A.R.S. § 36-3007. In preparing the report the Department of Economic Security (DES) consulted with the state coalition against domestic violence. The reporting system provides information on the population served, the types and usage of the services provided within the shelter, and the unmet needs of persons receiving shelter. $2.28 million is appropriated from the Domestic Violence Shelter Fund (DVSF), which is 15 percent of the total funds that the DES had available for domestic violence emergency shelters. This shelter fund report is based upon fiscal year 2009 information that is available from the DES statewide contractor reporting system. POPULATION SERVED 11,209 adults and children received services in 32 shelters located in 13 counties. Of the total number served, children represent 47 percent of that figure. THE SERVICES PROVIDED 373,601 nights of shelter were provided to adults and children during the year. The shelters provided 175,393 hours of case management, individual and group counseling and legal advocacy. The average length of stay in emergency shelter is 33 days. In addition, 22,358 hotline calls were received during fiscal year 2009. UNMET NEEDS OF PERSONS WHO RECEIVE SERVICES All the domestic violence shelters receiving Domestic Violence Shelter Funds were surveyed at the end of the fiscal year. They were asked to determine the needs for victims and their families that go beyond the scope of services their shelters provide. The primary need across the state is housing which this year includes the need for more emergency shelter beds, as some communities are still unable to meet the demand; transitional housing; and stable affordable housing. Transportation, childcare, and legal assistance were all identified as much needed supports for victims and their families. 1 Community Partnerships and Innovative Practices Domestic Violence Shelter Fund Report SFY 2009 (A.R.S. § 36-3007) POPULATION SERVED DOMESTIC VIOLENCE SHELTERS UNITS OF SERVICES PROVIDED Total served Adults Children Bed Nights COCHISE COUNTY 406 197 209 17,635 House of Hope - Catholic Community Services Sierra Vista Shelter - Catholic Community Services 192 214 77 120 115 94 9,761 7,874 COCONINO COUNTY 466 231 235 13,729 Northland Family Help Center Page Regional Domestic Violence Services 214 252 126 105 88 147 6,241 7,488 GILA COUNTY 218 113 105 8,697 Gila County Safe Home - Horizon Human Services Time Out, Inc. 81 137 38 75 43 62 2,161 6,536 GRAHAM/GREENLEE COUNTIES 116 54 62 4,359 Mt.
