The next Dewey/Humboldt Blood Drive is on Feb 9th at the Humboldt Bible Church. We have fallen short of donors at the last two blood drives and United Blood Services is needing blood at this time, so please find the time to come donate blood. You can call me and I will make your appointment or you can walk in. But please remember –if you come as a walk in— the appointments go first, so you may have to wait until the donors with appointments are taken care of. We have the best homemade refreshments for donors and a wonderful staff to help so please support your community and the blood drive! It starts at 1:30. Hope to see you there! Mary Franks 928 642 2115 The Town of Dewey-Humboldt, in cooperation with the Central Yavapai Fire District (CYFD), is offering the opportunity for homeowners to create defensible space around their homes nearly free of charge. The primary goal for Firewise Landscaping is fuel reduction, limiting the amount of flammable vegetation and materials surrounding the home and increasing the moisture content of remaining vegetation. The home itself and everything around it up to 100 – 200 feet is known as the ‘home ignition zone.’ In areas across the country where the risk of wildfire is high, the home ignition zone extends up to 200 feet beyond the actual home structure. Properties are divided into zones. Zone 1 encircles the structure and all its attachments (wooden decks, fences, and boardwalks) for at least 30 feet on all sides. Zone 2 is 30 to 100 feet from the home, and plants in this zone should be low-growing, well irrigated and less flammable. Zone 3 is 100 to 200 feet from the home and this area should be thinned, although less space is required than in Zone 2. CYFD was recently awarded a 90/10 grant through Prescott Area Wildland Urban Interface Commission (PAWUIC) that expires September 30, 2017. CYFD will provide pre and post property assessments for creating defensible space to homeowners at their request. This includes photo documentation as well as a written recommendation of hazardous fuels to be mitigated. The homeowner will hire a licensed contractor to complete the recommended work. Upon completion, the property will be reassessed and the property owner can be reimbursed up to 90% of their expenses. The maximum reimbursement is 90% of $1,000.00/acre, up to 1 acre. For an appointment to dis- Vol. 11 Issue 2 February 2016 cuss participation residents can call CYFD at 928-759-9933. Election: The Town Clerk’s office is gearing up for the launch of the Fall 2016 DeweyHumboldt Candidate Election Season. By May 2, 2016 Candidate packets will be available for anyone who is interested in running for one of 4 seats on Council (3 Council plus Mayor). If you think you might be interested in running for Council and are not sure if you are qualified to run, or what a run for office entails contact Judy Morgan, Town Clerk at 632-7362 for details. Stay tuned as more information will be provided pertaining to deadlines and activities of the election as it gets closer. Dewey-Humboldt Volunteer of the Year (2015) Process Begins: Every day Dewey-Humboldt volunteers generously give their time and service to help others. Now here is your chance to give back by nominating a deserving individual in DeweyHumboldt for his or her outstanding service through the Town’s Volunteer of the Year program. Who is eligible? The nomination is open to all Dewey-Humboldt residents who have volunteered in 2015. Nominees need to have been volunteers for organizations that directly benefit the citizens of the Town of DeweyHumboldt; the organization can be the Town Council; the Planning and Zoning Commission; the Open Space and Trails Committee; Volunteers for the Activity Center, the Town Library; Historical Society; Humboldt Elementary School; and other agencies that have programs benefitting the citizens of Dewey-Humboldt. The nomination process is simple. Nominations can be written on a piece of paper (one person per page), along with the organization(s) where the nominee volunteered, and why you believe the individual should be nominated. Nominations can be submitted in person, by email (judymorgan@dhaz.gov), or faxed (928- VOTY—Continued on page 2 2 The Dewey-Humboldt Newsletter VOTY—Continued from page 1 632-7365) to Judy Morgan by 5pm on Thursday, March 10, 2016. After the close of the nominations a citizen committee will be formed to review the nominees. They will be judged on their outstanding service to the citizens of Dewey-Humboldt. All nominees will be recognized with one being named “Volunteer of the Year” and whose name will be added to the plaque that hangs in the lobby of Town Hall listing all previous “Volunteer of the Year” recipients. The honoree of the “Volunteer of the Year” Award, along with all that have been nominated will be recognized at a Council Meeting and an event in May or June. This is a wonderful way for the Town to express its sincere appreciation for our volunteers and also for volunteers to inspire others through your stories. If you know anyone who volunteers in the community please let the Town know how he/ she is doing a great job by nominating him/her. Keep those nomination papers coming in! Please contact the Town Clerk, Judy Morgan, if you have any questions. The Community Survey has arrived and your input is needed: The Town Council has decided to conduct a Community Survey in the coming weeks to gain a better understanding of how community members feel about current government activities and future priorities. As reported in last issue of the newsletter, the town is conducting a community survey in December, January, and February. The survey will be conducted by Yavapai College's Regional Economic Development Center using multiple approaches. Some of you may have already received the questionnaire in the mail. Please fill it out and mail it back. 1500 survey questionnaires will be mailed out. The survey will also be available at town hall. YCREDC staff also plan to appear at the town library in January to conduct the survey. Your input is valued and appreciated. The Mayor and Town Council respect the opinions and needs of the citizenry and want to hear your voice so that they may better serve the town as it moves into an increasingly complex future. The Town of Dewey-Humboldt needs your input to create a path for prosperity and to maintain the quality of life that is valued by its citizens. Thank you for your time and consideration with this project. For questions regarding the survey, please contact Alex Wright, YCREDC Director, at 928-776-2378 or Yvonne Kimball, Town Manager, at 928-632-7362. Free Well Water Testing: The Town of DeweyHumboldt is offering to residents of the Town, free testing of well water samples from local residents’ well systems. Well Water Testing Includes – Copper, Lead, Arsenic While they last, sample bottles can be obtained at Town Hall from 8:00 am till 12:00 pm on February 8th through 11th, 2016. If you would like to reserve your kit now, RSVP Steven Brown at (928) 632-7362 indicating the day you will pick up the kit. Reasonable Accommodations for Residents with Disabilities: The Town of Dewey- Humboldt desires to provide equal opportunities for all our residents, and recognizes our responsibilities to uphold the “Arizonans with Disabilities Act”, Arizona Revised Statutes, Title 41, Chapter 9, Article 8. The Arizonans with Disabilities Act, is authorized by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and as such provides that the Town may not make zoning and land use decisions or implement land use policies that exclude or otherwise discriminate against individuals with disabilities. The ADA also provides that the Town is required to provide reasonable accommodations to persons with handicaps to enable them to enjoy the same opportunities for housing as other non-affected individuals. To assure our compliance with the federal and state requirements, Ordinance 2015-118 which is scheduled to be adopted early this year- proposes a set of amendments to Section 153 of the Town Code. The proposed amendments are intended to provide a clear and conspicuous written disclosure of our policy and procedures to comply with the ADA. The way it works in the Town is that if a person believes a requirement of the Zoning Code prevents him/her from enjoying the same opportunities for housing as other persons who are not handicapped, the individual may submit to the Town Manager (acting as the Zoning Administrator), a written request for accommodation and the reasons why the accommodation is required. The written request should contain sufficient facts to allow the Zoning Administrator to make an individualized determination of the person’s needs, to address the Town’s safety and welfare concerns, and to assure compliance with ADA. Please call the Town Manager or the Community Planner/ Code Officer at 632-7362. ALL DAY KINDERGARTEN WILL RETURN TO HUSD IN THE FALL All-day kindergarten for all students, at no cost to families, will be reinstated to the Humboldt Unified School District for the 2016-17 school year. Research is clear that full-day kindergarten attendance is linked to higher reading skill levels. Since 2010 the district witnessed achievement differences between children depending on whether they had a half-day or full-day kindergarten experience. The district now has about 400 kindergartners, and it is expected that resuming this program will lead to a 10 percent student increase in the first year. Eating, drinking, smoking and reading are all distractions that can take your focus away from driving, so avoid multitasking. Forget about your cell phone. Turn it off or put it on silent mode, and place it out of reach. Pull over. If you absolutely must make a phone call or send a text message, be sure to find a safe spot off the road to do so. Take care of directions ahead of time. If using a GPS, set the destination before leaving. If using a map or written directions, review them before leaving, or have a passenger lend assistance while on the road. Make sure children and pets are secure. If there are issues with either, find a safe spot off the road to address them. LEARN ABOUT OUR TOWN: HAVE COFFEE WITH THE TOWN MANAGER Monday, Feb 8th from 9 to 10am in the Town Manager’s Office.
