Council received 5 nominations and decided to recognize all as the 2014 Volunteers of the Year. The five individuals are: Betty Comfort, Frank Davidson, Judy Davidson, Sandra Goodwin and Sue Palacio. Council Official Recognition is scheduled for the August 4th Council Meeting at 6.30pm, Town Hall. A Community Picnic is scheduled for Friday August 7th from 5pm to 7pm at Butte St. Park (in the event of inclement weather conditions the event would take place inside Town Hall). Food and beverage will be provided. Please join Town Council and the Community in celebrating volunteerism. Town Council adopted the Fiscal Year 2015-16 budget on July 7 2015. The total expenditure is approximately $3.978 million, which is below the state imposed expenditure limitation of $4.22 million. The Final Budget is available on Town website. In the coming months, Town Council will consider implementing the programs determined by the Budget, such as a citizen survey. The Building Department would like to remind everyone that this time of year is when most home owners take on new DIY home improvement projects such as additions, garages, sheds, drive-way resurfacing, grading, and other building projects. If you are doing a building project or any type of home improvement project you may be required to obtain a building permit before you start. There can be substantial penalties for building without the required permit. The building department staff is available to help you with your per- mit or to answer any questions you may have about building permits. Before you begin your home/property improvement projects, please contact the Town Office with project details to find out if any permits are needed. Taking this simple step may prevent unexpected cost and headaches for all concerned parties during the improvement process. Town Staff wish all residents a positive experience improving your properties. Many of our residents know that the Town is working with the Prescott National Forest office to establish a trailhead at the end of Newtown Ave. as it enters into the Prescott National Forest multiple-use trails by the Town’s western boundary. Earlier this year, PNF advised that their office has approved the Town’s trailhead proposal and was excited to partner with the Town of Dewey-Humboldt, many civic organizations and Arizona State Parks to bring the project to reality in the near future. During the public comments period, PNF received nothing but notes of support from a broad range of organizations located in the Greater Prescott area. In order to fund the project’s design and construction, the PNF office applied for an Arizona State Parks Board grant in the amount of approximate $150,000. In June, PNF received the approval from AZ State Parks Board for the funding request. With this funding, the trailhead will be designed and constructed to accommodate multiple users, including hiking, equestrian and offhighway vehicles. This funding also allows for clearing brush on the 20 miles of trail accessed by the trailhead. It is likely that the project will break ground at the end of 2015. In preparation for the trailhead project, the Town has allocated funds to improve Newtown Ave., including the unpaved section that directly leads to the proposed trailhead. The Town has also planned to install directional signs on town rights-of-way to notify motorists of the trailhead. Town’s Open Space and Trails Committee (OSAT) has been working on getTOWN NEWS continued on page 2 2 The Dewey-Humboldt Newsletter TOWN NEWS continued from page 1 ting a trailhead for the Town for several years. Chair Sandra Goodwin has dedicated incredible amounts of energy and time to this project. Naturally she is extremely excited about the progress. As Sandra proudly put it, the trailhead would be a real solid addition for “Arizona’s Country Town”. Please stay tuned with town OSAT meetings for updates. The next OSAT meeting is on August 5 at 3.30 pm at Town Hall. COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT CORNER COMMUNITY GROWTH PERMITS ISSUED: The Town’s Building Department issued the following “new residence” permits over the last month. This information is provided to indicate growth in the community.   2 new Single Family Residences 0 Manufactured Homes COMMUNITY NEWS: STAMP MILL ARRIVES AT DHHS MUSEUM Here are a few pictures of the delivery of the stamp mill brought in from Kingman. The guys worked hard all weekend to get this to the museum. Disassembling after getting to Kingman, driving it back, and working on Sunday to get it piece by piece into the side yard of the museum. This was amazing to watch and when you see these pieces you will be amazed, too, just how they accomplished this! We have some strong, determined, and truly hard working men in the Historical Society. They do all this with a passion for the history of mining and the love of this town and bringing it to the citizens of Dewey- Humboldt. You will get to see the assembly of the mill come together in the months to come. HUMBOLDT ELEMENTARY SCHOOL THANKS COMMUNITY SUPPORT School is back in session in August. On behalf of Humboldt Elementary School staff and students, Bart Brush, a HES teacher and volunteer, wanted to take a moment to thank the community members and businesses who have contributed efforts to improve the school playground, hiking trail, and garden, including: Taylor Dalton and his Eagle Scout project, the Bradshaw Mt. Lions, Ace Hardware, Home Depot, Bonnie's Plants, Arizona Native Plant Society, Terroir Seeds (Chino Valley), True Value Hardware and The Native Garden (Prescott). Among all extra-curriculum activities Mr. Brush is in charge of, he leads a garden club for students at HES. During the summer, Mr. Brush planted some trees for the school near its playground. Unfortunately, the trees were vandalized a few days later, allegedly by juvenile(s). Needless to say, Mr. Brush was very disappointed and frustrated. In the new school year, Mr. Brush will continue projects like planting trees. If you are interested in volunteering or providing assistance, please call Mr. Brush at 710-7691. ARIA ROSE JUSTIN Born July 15, 2015 To Brittney & Lance Justin of Humboldt The Dewey-Humboldt Newsletter 3 OUR DISAPPEARING WILDLIFE By Garry Rogers Arizona’s diverse habitats host a truly rich mixture of plant and animal species. In our state, we can see half of the country’s mammal species, more than half of the country’s bird species, and more ant species than any other state. Our town is located near the center of the state at the upper end of the Agua Fria River Basin. With pine-topped mountains and chaparral foothills on both sides of the Basin, and with desert grassland in the north and the Sonoran Desert in the south, we have habitats suitable for project, please come to the inaugural meeting: Dewey-Humboldt Historical Society Museum Main Street in Humboldt 10:00 am, Saturday, August 15. AGUA FRIA FESTIVAL & OLD WEST DAY ADMISSION BUTTON CONTEST WINNER Dewey-Humboldt Historical Society is very pleased to announce the winner of the Admission Button Contest which was held at various schools in the area. The response was amazing and with so many great drawings to choose from it was sure made it difficult to pick the 1st place winner. The winner, Samuel Gordan, is a student at Bradshaw Mountain Middle School. The Dewey-Humboldt Historical Society wants to thank all the students who participated and the art teachers who made it possible. a large percentage of the State’s wildlife. No one knows how many species live in or pass through Dewey-Humboldt, but those of us living here know that the number is quite high. Wildlife biologists have observed that Arizona wildlife is declining, and the Arizona Game and Fish Department has summarized the observations on the Department’s website (http://azgfd.gov). I want to begin a series of short reports on endangered species that live in, or might have lived in Dewey -Humboldt. If you have suggestions, or would like to discuss the Admission Buttons for the Agua Fria Festival & Old West Day will be available at local businesses and at the D-H Museum by the middle of August. Before the event the Button sells for $1, day of the event they will cost $2. The Agua Fria Festival & Old West Day will be held September 26 starting with a parade on Main St. in Humboldt. This is a fundraiser for the Dewey –Humboldt Historical Society and it helps to keep the D-H Museum alive. We are excited to bring the early years of the West to our community today. LEAFY GREENS PROTECT COGNITION American Society for Nutrition Individuals who eat leafy greens, such as spinach, kale, and mustard greens, every day experience slower mental decline than those who eat no leafy greens. The diets of 954 older adults (at least 81 years of age at the study’s start) who were enrolled in Rush’s Memory and Aging Project were reviewed for 5 years. The researchers found that those who ate 1—2 servings of leafy greens each day demonstrated the mental capacity of someone more than a decade younger, even after accounting for gender, age, education, smoking, exercise, and any heightened Alzheimer’s risk. (Jerry) Heydorn Gone But Not Forgotten SQUASH BLOSSOM FRITTATA Whisk some eggs (say, 2 per person) in a small bowl, add a dash of water, whisk again and season with salt and pepper. Heat some olive oil in a non-stick frying pan over medium heat, add zucchini blossoms and fry gently for about 30 seconds. Pour over the egg mixture, reduce heat to low, and let it set for about 30 seconds to 1 minute. Stir couple of times, sprinkle some chopped green onions and spring onions/scallions on top, top with a spoonful or two of grated soft cheese (mozzarella, feta, soft goat cheese or Cheddar - all would work). Cover the frying pan with a lid and let the frittata set over a low heat. Alternatively, give it a few minutes under a hot grill.
