Highway 69, Dewey -Humboldt. One item on the agenda is to hear from the residents about your thoughts on the Town’s budget. The change of time for this meeting will not affect future work session meetings which are to occur pursuant to Town code at the second Tuesday of each month at 2:00 p.m. Dewey-Humboldt Volunteer of the Year (2014) Process Begins Every day Dewey-Humboldt volunteers generously give their time and service to help others. Now here is your chance to give back by nominating a deserving individual in Dewey-Humboldt for his or her outstanding service through the Town’s Volunteer-of-the-Year program. Who is eligible? The nomination is open to all Dewey-Humboldt residents who have volunteered in 2014. Nominees need to have been volunteers for organizations that directly benefit the citizens of the Town of Dewey-Humboldt; the organization can be the Town Council, Town Boards/Commission/Committees, including the Planning and Zoning Commission, and Open Space and Trail Committee, Volunteers for the Town’s Activity Center, the Town Library, the Historical Society, Humboldt Elementary School and other agencies that have programs benefiting the citizens of the Town of DeweyHumboldt are also eligible. Nomination Process: The process is simple. Nominations can be written on a piece of paper and submitted to Cathy Jackson at the Town office by 5 p.m. Thursday, April 16, 2015. Only one nomination per paper please. Please state the nominee’s name (who you are nominating), volunteer organization where the nominee volunteered in 2014, and why you believe the individual should be nominated, such as how his/her efforts volunteering in the specific organization have made a profound difference in citizens’ lives. Nomination papers can also be submitted via email to cathyjackson@dhaz.gov or faxed to 928-632-7365. Honoree Selection: The Town Manager will form a citizen committee to review the nominations after the nomination period is closed in April. The Committee then makes a recommendation to the Council. Nominees will be judged on their outstanding service to the citizens of Dewey- Humboldt. The Honoree of the “Volunteer -of-the-Year” Award, along with all that have been nominated, will be recognized by Town Council in May or June. This is a wonderful way for the Town to express its sincere appreciation for our volunteers and also a great opportunity for volunteers to inspire others through their stories. Last year, Mr. Thomas Grimshaw was the Honoree of the 2013 Volunteer of the Year Award. This year once again, if you know anyone who volunteers in the community, please let the Town know how he/she is doing a great job by nominating him/her. Keep those nomination papers coming in! Kindly contact the Town Manager if you have any questions. COMMUNITY CLEAN-UP DATES Please be advised of the upcoming “clean-up” days for D-H residents. COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT CORNER WE NEED YOUR HELP TO FILL OUT THE CDBG SURVEY FORM! As many of you know, the Town of Dewey-Humboldt is eligible for Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) FY15 grant funding in the amount of $266,693. The fund is used for activities that benefit low- and moderate-income persons. After a period of soliciting eligible projects, the Town has decided to pursue the funds for street/drainage/sidewalk improvements in these neighborhoods: the areas of E. Kachina Place, Blue Hills Farm and S. Huron St. In order to pursue grant funds the Town is required to conduct a survey to determine the percentage of low to moderate income for “current residents” in the beneficiary areas. If you live or own properties in the above mentioned areas, you are likely to receive an income survey from Northern Arizona Council of Governments (NACOG) on behalf of the Town by March 2, 2015. The information will be kept strictly confidential and there will be no way for anyone to connect the information you supply regarding your income with your name and address. The result of the survey, however, will determine whether or not the Town can utilize the grant funds to improve these areas. The Town is asking for your participation in the survey. If you receive one of these letters and reside in the residence please answer the survey form, sign it and return it in the enclosed (stamped) self -addressed envelope to NACOG prior to March 30, 2015. If you receive a letter and do not live at the residence please contact Isabel Rollins with NACOG at 928-778-2692 or Deni Thompson at 928-632-7362 to assist us in collecting qualified information. NEW BUILDING PERMITS The Town’s Building Department issued the following permits in January:  1 New Single Family Residence  1 Other New Building (Garage)  1 New Manufactured Home FROM THE COMMUNITY AGUA FRIA FESTIVAL UPDATE: DO WE WANT TO LOSE A PIECE OF ARIZONA HISTORY? By Bob Greene, Current Agua Fria Festival Committee Chair EDITOR’S NOTE: The Agua Fria Festival is run by the Agua Fria Festival Committee, and the Committee is an independent organization separate from the Town’s operation. In the past years, the Town has supported the Festival financially. The views expressed in this article may be representative of the Agua Fria Festival Committee, but do not necessarily represent the Town’s position. This past year the Bradshaw Mountain Lion’s Club produced the Agua Fria Festival. The Festival is the oldest and longest running festival in the State of Arizona. This year it will be 111 years old! It is a great tradition and historical part of our Town’s legacy to Arizona. The Lion’s Club can no longer produce the Festival and it may be destine to fade. The Festival brings dollars to Dewey-Humboldt and those dollars convert to tax dollars that can help run our Town. Regardless of what some people think, I believe the Town needs businesses to survive and the Festival has the potential to draw people to our community. I am looking for a nonprofit organization that would be willing to step up and run this historic event. I have requested a grant from the Town for $5000 for this year’s Festival and have a bank account with funds to turn over to an approved entity. The Festival is not hard to run; it just takes some time and people. The current Festival Committee intends for the profits to go to building a park and sports complex for the kids and town residents. In 2013, the Agua Fria Festival purchased $8500 worth of playground equipment, and materials to donate to the Town’s Butte St. Park. I appeal to every resident and organization within Dewey-Humboldt to search your souls and not let this historic event fade into the sunset. What about the Little League? You need funds. The Park we are trying to build would provide playing fields for you. Can your parents step in? How about the American Legion Post 78? Isn’t the Legion supposed to give back to the Town? It would be a great project for you. How about someone stepping up and forming a DeweyHumboldt Chamber of Commerce and sponsoring the Festival? There is also the Historical Society who needs funds to keep the museum alive. The Agua Fria Festival already has non-profit status. We are incorporated and all the work has been done for you. I will act as an advisor for your first year and remember that in years past we had over 25,000 visitors to the festival and sold nearly 200 booth space, each at $175.00. We have in place sponsors who contribute every year and a ton of other ways to generate profits. I will help but need someone or organization to step up. Could that be you?
